The Australian Open semifinals are set!!!
Before I get to the upsets, I just want to say that Novak Djokovic, Stephen Tispitas, Naimoi Osaka, Petrick Kvitova, and Rafael Nadal all took care of business on their end.
Now let’s look at the upsets!
Number 28 seed, Lucas Poullie continued his improbable run, as he was able to knock off the 16th seeded Milos Raonic in 4 tight sets, 7-6, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
Lucas did a great job of breaking The Canadian Milos on his serve when he needed to, as it was a match of two very big servers.
Lucas will look to take this run all the way into the finals when he meets Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.
Daniel Collins is unbelievable!!!
She continues to will her way past opponents, as she knocked off Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, in a battle of Cinderella story’s, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Both players, really held their own in the first two sets, Anastasia, more than Daniel though.
In the 3rd set though, Collins came out of nowhere, and really took control of this match, captivating the crowd with her inspiring tennis, as she steamrolled over Anestia in the final set.
The American has had a great run so far and will look to keep it going when she faces the 8 seed Petrick Kvitova in the semifinals.
While those were great upsets, they didn’t come as close as this match I am about to tell you.
Serena Williams looked to keep her historic bid alive, as should she win this tournament, Williams would tie Margret Court for the most Grand Slam victories ever at 24.
But she would be going up against the 7 seed, Karoline Pliskova, who got the break of serve in the first set and maintained that lead, winning the 1st set 6-4.
Williams however, would come right back in the second set, breaking Pliskova, and winning the second set 6-4.
Just like her fellow American Daniel Collins, Serena cruised in the final set, as she found herself up 5-1, and serving, only needing one more point to move on to the semifinals.
But after foot fault, and rolling her ankle on consecutive plays, everything unraveled from there, as Pliskova came all
the way back and won the set 7-5, to take the match in a shock to the tennis world.
Serena said after in her press conference that her ankle was fine.
Meanwhile, as for Pliskova, she will face the 4 seed Naimoi Osaka in the semifinals.
