It wasn’t easy, but the Yankees were able to complete the doubleheader sweep of the Red Sox, clinch the series and extend their lead in the division over Boston to 13.5 games with a 6-4 win in the Bronx on Saturday night (4/3) at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees had to rally down twice in this game and get out of a late Red Sox threat to complete the sweep and they did.
Chad Green started as the “Opener” for the Yankees, and did his part, as he retired the Red Sox in order. But in the second, Nestor Cortez JR relived Green and though he had a great second inning, he didn’t have a great 3rd, as Rafael Devers went deep for a 2runHR that gave the Red Sox an early 2-0 lead.
As for Brian Johnson, he started great in the “Opener” role for Boston, as he pitched a scoreless first two innings before running into trouble in the 3rd, as Gleyber Torres went deep to get the Yankees on the board and cut their deficit down to 2-1.
Later in the inning, with 2 on and 2 out, Camron Maybin came up clutch once again for the Yankees, as he ripped a 2 run double down the left field line that gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead, capping off a 3 run 4th.
Chance Adams, who was appointed as the “26th man” for today’s doubleheader, relived Cortes in the 4th, and gave the Red Sox the lead back, as Yankee-Killer Mookie Betts singled home 2 runs that put Boston right back on top 4-3.
However, Adams would recover and pitch a scoreless 5th to keep the Yankees in the game and allowing their offense to once again come alive.
In the bottom of the 5th, Gleyber Torres was at it again, as he went deep to tie the game at 4. Then in the 7th with the bases loaded and 1 out, Mike Tauchman slapped a single to right, to put the Yankees in the lead once again at 6-4.
In the top of the 8th, Zack Britton relived Adam Ottavino, who relived Tommy Kahlene in the 7th, as the Yankees clung to a 6-4 lead after Tauchmans single. But Boston wasn’t done yet, as they loaded the bases with 2 outs for Rafael Devers, Who Britton struck out on a nasty 0-2 pitch down in the zone to keep the Yankees in the lead.
In the 9th, Aroldis Chapman came on to lock down in his second save in as many nights, as the Yankees completed the sweep of the doubleheader and clinched the season series over Boston with a 6-4 victory.
MVP: Gleyber Torres
INJURY REPORT:
Another Yankee is headed to the IL, as Aaron Hicks left tonights game in the 8th with a right flexor strain. He is expected to be back in approximately 4 weeks.
STATS TO KNOW:
The Yankees now have had 32 different guys on the IL this season. The most in the majors.
The Yankees are now 10-0 in Openers!
THOUGHTS:
I’ll take this sweep! But let’s really do it on Sunday night! Great job out of the pen, Gleyber is a beast and Tauchman continues to come up clutch for us!
It’s frustrating with another injury coming our way in Hicks, but as we have said the whole season #nextmanup.
UP NEXT:
The Yankees will go for the 4 game sweep on Sunday in a matchup of recently new dads, as JA Happ will oppose David Price.
Game time is 7:05 PM.
