A GIANT STEP BACK. MY THOUGHTS ON THE 2019 SEASON AND LOOKING AHEAD TO 2020!!

My end of the season press conference. My thoughts on the 4-12 campaign.

Q: Thoughts on the Shumer Fire?

A: Saw it coming, just didn’t run the offense so well, and the defense was worse. Liked him last year , but not so much this year obviously. One of the reasons is because we underperformed.

Q: You realize this NYG team could’ve made the playoffs right?

A: Yes, but having bad defenses will kill you in those close games. In hindsight, obviously looking back at how the division played out, we could’ve made it close but I don’t think we would’ve won it. We were horrible in our division games. If we had an elite defense, then just maybe we could’ve taken that title. But Philly deserved that with all the injuries they had. Really incredible!

Q: Shocked Dallas missed the postseason?

A: Yes and I don’t think I’m the only one. Big underachievers.

Q: Would You Fire GM David Gettelman?

A:Yes I would. I felt like they took a step back this past year. They had the opportunity to get better with who was on the market and got worse. It all started with the OBJ trade and has continued all the way through a dismal 4-12 season and the firing of their 3rd HC in 5 seasons.

Q:What position do u think they’ll draft? After all they have the 4th pick!

A:I think it depends who falls to them. It may not seem like a lot because they got the 4th pick, but the Redskins have similar needs to them and draft higher.

Ultimately, they draft a DB (Defensive back) or a OT (Center) in round 1. They need that badly.

Q: Why do you think the Giants retained Gettelman for 2020 as their GM?

A:I feel the management are giving him a clean slate, this next season will decide everything in my opinion.

Owner John Mara and the other guys are livid, they aren’t happy with how the season went.

I think you have to consider, that the FO thought this was an 8-8 teams I thought 6-10 and we were both wring because they were more terrible then we thought.

Q: But my question is if they are really unhappy with this why are they retaining the GM?

A:Like I said, they are giving him one last shot, it’s a”Make or break year” for him.

Q: I agree with that but at the same time I feel that they brought him in to rebuild and you have to give him a year or two to see how his plan turns out don’t you?

A: It hasn’t turned out well so far and unless they something changes it won’t work to it’s fullest.

Q: What does Gettelman need to achieve in order to keep his job next offseason?

A: Lots of things

1. Get a good coach that will bring everyone together. One of the reasons I liked TC (Tom Couphlin) , was Bc he brought everyone together and they all brought in to his philosophy.

I’m not saying they need a guy like Tom, but they need someone that knows how to run the offense and can bring everyone together. An example of that are the Dolphins, as with an 0-16 type roster, they went 5-11.

2. Draft well: The Giants can improve at

ER

OT

CB

LB

O line

Safety.

WR

RB

DB

Not all of them are must needs, but u can improve in those needs depth wise

3. Scan the FA/trade market

You never know what guys will pop up, if they suit ur needs go after them.

If he does all that, he can retain his job once again. I understand the management giving him a clean slate. It’s time to capitalize though.

Q: What are your thoughts on Daniel Jones?

A: Lots of potential is there. Obviously, the ball security was awful, but the TDs were amazing. He made a lot of rookie mistakes, but obviously showed some flashes of brilliance. He really reminds you of a young Eli, and I think from what he showed so far, he can be the next Eli Manning.

But frankly, the clock on him really starts next season, because he wasn’t initially supposed to play in 2019, but he did and learned a lot from it.

Q: Did the O line have a lot to do with Jones maybe not doing as well as it should have?

A: Oh absolutely, and that was the same with Eli whenever he played this season. That has to get better If Jones will succeed. It’s tough for any QB, let alone a young one like DJ to reach his full potential in this tough league.

Q:I know it’s not Giants related, but is that the problem with Sam Darnold too?

A: Yes I think it is. We will see next year what Sam is all about in my opinion. The advantage Jones has over Sam, is he started early.

Q: Thoughts on Saquon Barkley this season?

A: Obviously, it wasn’t as spectacular as last year was because he was hurt and the O line was worst than ever. But, he was amazing when healthy this season. What I choose to look at is down the stretch this season, with an example being his 68 yard TD run in the finale. That’s vintage Saquon right there.

I also like his chemistry with DJ this year, that tandem should be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Q: How do you think Nate Soldier will fair next year?

A: If he’s healthy, he can be a good leader on a young o line.

Q:Thoughts on Alex Tanny?

A: Too early to tell, let’s see how he does next year as the backup QB of the NYG.

Q: What do you think of David’s “Computer Folks”?

A: Good! It’s always nice to have some analytic guys on your side.

Q: Who do you want as the next coach of the New York Giants?

A: Mike McCarthy, because he can really develop Jones. But I think it’s going to be Matt Ruhle and I’m okay with that because he’s got a good tract record at Baylor, and from what I hear will embrace the pressure of being in NY.

Q: How do you think the Giants will do next season?

A: Depends what they do, but I say 6-10 if everything stays the way it is.

Q: You see the Giants hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in how long?

A: 5-7 years. Be patient, it’s going to be along rebuild.

Q: What about a playoff team?

A: Their Division stinks, so I would say 2-3 years.

Q: Who’s your playoff team in 2019, like who will you be rooting for as a Giants fan in the playoffs?

A: I would say the Seahawks, I like Russel Wilson and Co. I’m not rooting for the Eagles because they are in our division obviously. As for San Fran, I don’t know man, I just like Seattle better.

Q: TEAM MVP?

A: It’s hard man! So many candidates, like Darious Slayton, Kenny Smith, DJ... but in the end I say Slayton because week in and week out, he was spectacular.

Thank you Marvin, and enjoy your offseason!

Thank you for having me.
