The Yankees wrapped up their mini two-game series against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night, with an exhilarating 8-6 win at Camden Yards in Baltimore; the decisive blow was an Aaron Judge 3run bomb in the top of the 9th, to put the Yankees ahead for good.
The win is the Bombers’ 18th straight against the O’s dating back to last year, and the 21st straight game against their opponent with at least 1 long-ball, becoming the first team to ever do that against the Orioles, in MLB history.
It didn’t take long for the Yankees to make history, as after two hit batsmen, and an RBI single by Giancarlo Stanton, that scored Judge, Luke Voit walloped his first career grand slam to left field, off O’’s starter John Means to give the Yankees a commanding 5-0 lead. On a pitch count, Means was pulled after just 2.1 innings, before the Orioles bullpen went 7 scoreless innings, to keep their team alive in this game.
As for Yankees starter JA Happ, he promptly surrendered a 2 run HR to Hanser Alberto, in the first, and another 2run bomb to Rio Ruiz in the 2nd, that cut the Yankees lead down to 5-4, as Happ would depart after only 4 innings. Adam Ottavino would pitch a scoreless 5th, before the skies opened up and the rain suspended play for 1 hour and 34 minutes, with 5.5 innings in the books.
When the game resumed, Jonathan Losiga pitched 2 scoreless innings for the Yankees, before serving up a go-ahead 2 run blast to Renantendo Nunez, that gave Baltimore a sudden 6-5 lead. But the Yankees would rally in the 9th, off Orioles Reliever Cody Sulser, as a walk Urshela, and a one-out single by DJ LeMahieu brought up Aaron Judge, who on a 2-1 count, took a pitch at the knees for a strike that was called a ball by the umpire, before depositing the next pitch into the left-field seats, for a go-ahead 3 run blast that gave the Yankees the lead for good, as Zack Britton would enter and notch the save against his former team in the 9th, to secure a sweep-clinching 8-6 Yankees victory. The homer also gave Aaron Judge series MVP honors.
The Yankees are now 4-1 and will face the Boston Red Sox (3-4), in a 3 game series beginning with Friday's home opener. It will be Joran Montgomery making his first start in two years for the Yankees, after missing 2019 due to Tommy Jhon Surgery, against Ryan Weber of Boston. The first pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
