This was it. All the Mets needed were 3 more outs and they would officially send a statement to the league if the hadn’t already that they weren’t done yet and they may have one last push in them to get in and make the playoffs. This was one of those nights for the Mets that you wouldn’t forget. They had gotten to Nationals ace Max Scherzer on a Joe Panik 2run blast and had gotten to the Nationals bullpen in the 8th when Jeff McNeil went deep to give the Mets a 5-2 lead. As for their own starter in Jacob Degrom, he had lasted long enough to leave with a 5-4 lead and the Mets bullpen in good hands through 8.
In the top of the 9th, clutch hits by McNeil and Todd Frazier set the stage for Pete Alonso who’s 2run blast gave him 44HRs on the season and capped off a 5run 9th that put “The icing on the cake” as the Mets now led it 10-4 and with a 6 run lead and a red-hot reliver Paul Sewald coming in to sign off on this contest, the Mets had sent a message to the league saying “We aren’t done yet”.
Turns out they were right, they weren’t done with this game yet.
It all started when Victor Robles led off with an infield single. Follow that up with a. 1out double by Tre Turner that scored Robles, a double my Asdrubal Cabrera and an RBI single by Anthony Rendon and you have a 10-6 game with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out and Luis Avilan coming in.
Then, a Juan Soto single loaded the bases for Ryan Zimmerman as Edwin Diaz entered with the Mets 2 outs away from a win but the Nationals having the tying run at the plate.
A Zimmerman RBI double made it 10-8 for Kurt Suzuki who on the 8th pitch of his at bat socked a walk off 3run HR to left field to put a capper on the biggest comeback in Nationals history and the loss that may have ended any hopes of the Mets being a playoff team this year.
THOUGHTS:
Like Keith Hernandez said, “If this Isn’t the nail in the coffin for the Mets. It’s awfully close”.
STATS TO KNOW:
Entering tonight, teams leading by six-plus runs in the bottom of the ninth inning were 274-0.
Teams leading by six-plus runs at any point in the ninth were 507-1.
Also the Mets were 806-0 when they had a 6run lead in the 9th inning or later
The type of loss the Mets suffered tonight at Nationals Park just doesn't happen.

The Mets will try and somehow recover from this tomorrow when they send Zach Wheeler to the mound against Anibal Sanchez. Game time is at 1:05.
