BLUNDEROUS! YANKS EXPOSED IN 13 INNING L TO M’S

After four hours of dominant pitching, some bad baserunning and slick defense, punch hitter Luis Torrens and the Seattle Mariners finally broke through and sent everyone to bed at 11:17 PMPT for those on the happy West Coast and 2:17AM ET for the sleepy and despondent New Yorkers.

Torrens singled with one out in the 13th inning to score Eugenio Suárez, and the Mariners ousted the Yankees 1-0 on Tuesday night in a game dominated by the aces that are Gerrit Cole and Luis Castillo.

It was the pitchers duel we’d expected to see last week, but Cole was late to the occasion giving up six runs in the first inning, in an eventual 7-3 defeat while Castillo scuffled New York bats in his debut with his new squad after being dealt from Cincinnati at the trade deadline. Tuesday, Luis was adroit in front of his new home fans, matching Cole by going eight scoreless frames with seven strikeouts, only allowing three hits and two walks. In the three outings combined against the team with the AL’s top record, Castillo has thrown 21 2/3 innings, allowed four earned runs and struck out 23.

As for Gerrit, he avenged last weeks clunker with seven scoreless innings, eight k’s four hits and two walks. It was the first major league game to reach the 13th inning scoreless since new rules were implemented in 2020 putting an automatic runner at second base to start each extra inning.

Some putrid baserunning by the Yankees foiled their plans for a series-clinching win. Standing at second as the automatic runner, Andrew Benentendi broke for third too early and was picked off. If that wasn’t bewildering enough, the Yanks set a record with a lowly four plate appearances in two innings, as Aaron Hicks lined out to second which also doubled off Miguel Andujar, before Isaiah-Kiner Falefa was part of a double play in the 12th, trying to take advantage of Jose Trevino being rundown at third base and was tagged out at second.

However, those opportunities were imminent because of the job done by their bullpen, as Aroldis Chapman and Clay Holmes twirled scoreless innings following Cole and sent the contest to extras prior to a clean Scott Effross 10th. In the 11th, Wandy Peralta induced a double play ball off the bat of Carlos Santana to keep things scoreless, and saved his teams bacon once more when he k’d Eugene Suarez to strand the bases loaded.

Eventually, the Mariners came through in the 13th. Cal Raleigh singled off Jonathan Loáisiga, and advanced Suárez from second to third. One out later, Sam Haggerty was intentionally walked to load the bases and Torrens lined an 0-2 pitch into right field to set off the celebration.
