The Flatbush Falcons, got to pop their well earned champnage on Thursday night (12/27), as they rallied to once again, beat the YDE Thunder in overtime 3-2 at the Thunder Dome.
The win keeps Flatbush undefeated vs YDE, in their all-time head to head.
It is also the third time this season, that YDE has lost by one goal.
Unlike, last time , this was a defensive battle, with the stars still showing their stripes.
The game started and we were off on” Thursday night hockey “ , as Flatbush came out flying and eventually scored , when Gerry Sabbagh made some nifty moves around the YDE defense and scored to give Flatbush an early 1-0 lead.
Flatbush didn’t, let up after that, as they continued to pressure Thunder goalie Charles Sulatan, who was up to the task keeping his team in it.
YDE hung In there, had their chances and scored , when Bobby Tawil tapped the puck in to tie the game at 1.
For the rest of the period, Ronnie Novick and Charles Sulatan engaged in a stare down, determined to not let the puck get by them as the period ended 1-1.
In the second, the intensity picked up in this rivalry game, as the defenses tightened up. The game remained tied , until Sammy Franco shot a missile top shelf over Novick to give the Thunder the lead and send YDE nation into a frenzy!
The teams settled into back and forth play for the remainder of the period, with both goalies and their defenses really strutting their stuff!
The period ended with YDE up 2-1 and tasting that historic first ever win over Flatbush.
The third period, seemed like an eternity to YDE fans, as they continued to hold off, a barrage of Flatbush shots, while also getting some insurance chances as well.
As the game neared it’s final minutes, you wondered if Flatbush, was going to show their trademark resolve and tie this thing up.
They did, as with 50.4 seconds left, Gerry Sabbagh worked his magic and got one past Sulatan for the game tying goal, that sent the Flatbush faithful into a frenzy and deflated the YDE Thunder, as the teams regrouped when regulation ultimately ended for overtime.
Overtime was frantic , as both teams pushed for that GWG and it appeared the Thunder had it, when Ikey Dweck hit the crossbar, that appeared to have gone in, sending YDE into a momentary celebration, before the referee waved his arms signaling no goal.
Flatbush took advantage of that spilt second, as they went on a 2 on 0 rush, with Gerry feeding Joseph Maymie who tapped in the game winner, to punch the Falcons ticket into the postseason.
Instead of spraying themselves in victory champnge , the Falcons went out for a celebratory dinner at “Retro Grill” before giving their thoughts to the press.
Flatbush:
Jack Hanan:
“ I was praying, hoping we would score that equalizer “
“ When we did, I went nuts , then in Overtime, I just knocked over the boards and attacked Maymie and Gerry “” They are both insane they kept us in it so many times , they are legends!”
“ I did not have a great game at all but Zalta, ( Morris Zalta) and Kassin( Jacob Kassin ) held it down. “” I definitely have a lot to work on for the playoffs.”
Jacob Kassin:
“It’s always feels great to sweep a rival. I feel that we could’ve played so much better but we got both wins and that’s all that matters”
“I knew that we could make that comeback and I had confidence in the whole team to get that goal to tie up the game. Not a single person on the team (even the coaches) felt that we weren’t going to let this game get away from us.”
“Right now we just have to focus on getting some rest until our next game on January 31st against Ramaz (4-3). I think they’re a beatable team and we can get the W. We aren’t focusing on playoffs right now so we can have a good mentality going into the next game.”
“The chemistry between those two are amazing. Between the passes and goals, it’s amazing. I think they are one of the top duos in the league. “ ( On Gerry And Maymie).
“Ronny hung in there tonight, making the big saves when they were most needed. He played like a beast tonight and kept us in this game.”
“ His playing was outstanding. In my opinion, he is the number 1 star of the game.”
“That was a heck of a shot. Honestly I think that it didn’t go in. It hit crossbar and down. Ronny made a great play by not turning around.”
“If he turned around, that was going in off of his back. It was the defenses fault for leaving him wide open in the middle of the court. That’s definitely something we are going to work on as our next game approaches”
“We haven’t spoken about playoffs yet because we don’t want to put more pressure on the team. Once the final standings come out we’re going to start talking about playoffs. “
“It just feels good to always beat any team no matter who they are.” ( After going 4-0 vs Brooklyn teams)
“YDE games for sure. No question about it.”
“We were missing our one of best players for both of those games. Mamiye wasn’t able to play for the first period of the first time we met, and the second game he wasn’t allowed to play for the first 2 periods of the game. “ (Due to off the court issues)
“In both of those games, YDE took advantage of that and came out strong. Plus, both of those games YDE was ahead the whole game and then we make a comeback. YDE is definitely a harder team to beat than Magen. “
YDE:
Marvin Azrak:
“ Look, all I can say is, congratulations to Flatbush and I wish them good luck in the playoffs. They earned the series sweep, and showed that they were destined to win, these two games”
“ If you guys are going to ask me any questions, please make it about the MDY game, it has nothing to do with tonight, it’s just that I have been waiting for that game all season long and now that it’s finally here, I want to focus on that”
“ I’ll be honest, the reason why I think I will get a good reception in the intros is because we had a lot of great memories there”
“ We staged upsets, showed our resolve and smashed franchise records , it was really an unforgettable three years of hockey “
“ I don’t look at it, as an act of betrayal, I have the upmost respect for MDY, it’s just that, I felt like YDE was the best choice for me going forward and that’s it. I have nothing against MDY HS, it’s just that I saw something new, checked it out and decided to try it.”
“ No I don’t regret my decision, but I do know that I wouldn’t be here if not for MDY Elementary, they are one of the reasons, of who I am today, once again thank you!”
“ I have kept saying , that if I’m going to score this season, I want to vs MDY, just because of the circumstances and plus, it’s always nice to score against your former team.”
“ Your funny, but no I don’t think I will have trouble finding the visitors locker room”
“ It will be very emotional for me and Sammy in the beginning, but the mindset is the same. Do whatever you have to do to win this game!”
Leftovers:
Jacob Sutton , Ikey Dweck, Steven Shemula And Michel Sutton all played great on defense!
Jake Linado, did a great job, of setting up Gerry, when Maymi was out.
