The Texas Rangers new stadium will come with a big splash.
Star pitcher and former CY Young award winner, Corey Kluber is headed to the Texas Rangers, in a deal with the Cleveland Indians. In the trade, the Indians will receive top pitching prospect, Emmanuel Clase and OF Delino Deshields. Texas will also receive Cash considerations in the deal.
This is big for the Rangers, as they now have a big duo at the top of their rotation in Mike Minor and Kluber. The 34 year old RHP, has 2 years and $10 million left on his contract, and will spend it with the Rangers, as they look to compete in an AL West that features the defending AL Champion Astros, Anthony Rendon, Mike Trout and the Angles, the feisty Oakland A’s, and the young and upcoming Seattle Mariners. The Rangers went 67-95 in 2019, but are projected to be a whole laptop better than that this year, with star Joey Gallo returning and now Kluber headed to Texas.
From an Indians perspective, it shocked many experts and fans. While Clase is a top pitching prospect, we are talking about Corey Kluber here, who when healthy is one of the top pitchers in baseball. The Indians could’ve gotten way more MLB talent as well, then Delino, who while is a good OF alone, isn’t worth the value Kluber was supposed to have on the trade market. Cleveland is trying to go into this “Half rebuild”, so I understand the move from that lens, but with the Angles, Dodgers and Yankees also having interest, they could have unloaded their top prospects for an even better package.
Then again, as I’m typing this, the Rangers offer was reportedly “The best one”, so the Indians just took what they got and went with it.
Personally, I thought Kluber’s value was a bit higher, but the fact that he was hurt this year really diminished his stock further then I expected.
In conclusion, I still feel the Indians could’ve done better and demanded a bit more to stay competitive while also rebuilding, which is why I give the Rangers the edge in this deal.
