YANKEES OFFSEASON MOVES SO FAR:
JACOBY, BIRD GONE:
On 11/20, the Yankees said goodbye to OF Jacoby Elsburry and 1B Greg Bird by releasing them. For Jacoby, he did not live up to the 7 year $153 million deal he signed in the 2013 offseason. He was a no-show in the last two years due to multiple injuries that kept him off the field. The 36 year old hasn’t played since 2017.
As for Bird, he was also injury prone as the 24 year old could just never stay healthy, despite several chances to rebound over the past couple of years , and show his potential to the Yankees. Bird will now either head back to the DR league or play on an MLB team. The Rays, Rockies and Red Sox reportedly have interest in the young 1B.
CORTEZ TO M’S:
Nestor Cortez JR is gone. The young pitcher started his 2019 off great, with most noteworthy performance coming on June 15th, when he pitched 4 scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox.
But after that, he just never panned out and went into a huge slump, finishing with a 5.67 ERA on the season.
On 11/26, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners for international pool money. I like the deal because it can give us some money to get some amazing international prospects that can add up and be better than Cortes. Good move Cashman!
