The NHL Lottery is headed to overtime. On Friday night, a “placeholder” team representing one of the playoff qualifiers overcame the improbable odds, and defeated the 7 non-resuming teams to notch the first pick in this years NHL Draft. The league held three separate lotteries, with the Kings moving up 5 spots to notch pick #2, while the Senators who had 2 picks in the top 3, via the Erik Karlson trade with the San Jose Sharks, saw that pick remain at 3, while there own pick fell three spots to 5. As for the Detroit Red Wings, they will be picking 4th despite being the worst team in hockey this season.
Teams 6-8, were the Ducks, Devils and Sabers.
After the qualifying round is completed, the NHL will conduct a separate lottery only featuring the 8 losers from the play-in round, with each team having a 12.5% chance to notch the first pick. The rest of the draft order will be in reverse order of playoff seeding.
