Coming into this offseason, the 2019 FA class was called the “Year of the pitcher’s” with 4 big-time pitchers leading the crop. The king of the “Core Four” is the best pitcher in baseball in Gerit Cole, while Stephen Strasburg, Madison Bumgarner and Zach Wheeler followed behind Cole.
So far, two have made their move.
We saw Zach Wheeler decide staying close to home over the money, as he signed with the Phillies for 5 years $118 million, despite the White Sox going for $120 million.
Yesterday , we just saw Stephen Strasburg get a record deal for a pitchers in years and AAV (Average Annual Value), with the team that drafted him in the Washington Nationals at 7 years,$245 million (35 AAV).
Up next is the “King of the crop” in Gerit Cole, who will reportedly sign this week, with the Yankees and Angels both motivated to land him and the Dodgers lurking as well. The Yankees met with Cole and Strassburg last week in SoCal, in an attempt to sway them to the Bronx.
THOUGHTS ON STRASS:
This means Cole is signing VERY Soon!!!
It doesn’t effect the Yankees pursuit of Cole, because we already knew they would need to go to $250 million (Which they are willing to go to) to get him and now it’s official with Strass getting 245.
However, it does increase the intrest in him and it has to the Angles as the Gerit Cole Sweepstakes has reportedly reached is World Series. Yankees Vs Angles. The Dodgers are lurking but the Yankees and Angles have been described as “1 and 1A” according to MLB Network.
We will see what happens, but I really hope the Yankees land him.
Personally, only thing that this Strass decision changes for me is my anxiousness for Cole to sign.
As for Strass, I’m happy for him because he deserves this big pact and will be staying with the team that drafted him.
