DEGROMINANT: JAKE TAME PHIL’S, METS BACK ON TRACK!

Jacob deGrom struck out 10 in six “Degrominant” innings and Edwin Díaz notched his 200th career save, helping the New York Mets even their series against their division rival in the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0 on Saturday night at Citi Field in Queens, NY.

Pete Alonso hit an early RBI single as the NL East leaders improved to 31-9 following a loss and secured the season series against Philadelphia which is imperative if the two teams finish the year tied as their is no longer a game 163 possibility with MLB’s new rules in place.

Alonso leads the NL with 97 RBIs and is three behind Aaron Judge for the league lead.

That run was all Jacob Degrom needed. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner and “DeGrominator” opened the game by striking out Bryson Stott looking on a 101.1 mph fastball. Later, after Alec Bohm grounded into a force play, deGrom fanned J.T. Realmuto on three straight sliders and he never liked back the rest of the way.

Jake (2-0, 1.62 ERA) allowed two hits and walked none in merely his third start after spending the first part of the season on the IL. It was Degrom’s second double-digit strikeout game since returning and 55th for his career. The 34 year-old improved to 9-1 in 20 career starts against the Phillies. He’s yielded six hits, three runs, struck out 28 and issued one walk in 16 2/3 innings so far this year, looking like his legendary sled which is a redoubtable sight for impending October corrivals.

Díaz issued two walks in the ninth clearly not having command of his slider , and Philadelphia had runners on second and third when Nick Castellanos struck out swinging on a triple-digit fastball for the final out. It was Díaz’s league-leading 27th save of the season.

The All-Star and presumptive NL reliver of the year; became the sixth active pitcher to reach 200 saves and wrapped up his teams MLB-leading 15th shutout.

Despite the defeat, Aaron Nola pitched like the ace the Phillies need him to continue to be if they want to make a run at the playoffs, and went right innings of one run ball, allowed four hits with eight strikeouts, but dropped to 0-3 in four starts against New York this year.

Nola became the first Philadelphia pitcher to toss a complete game against the Mets in New York since Kyle Kendrick in 2013 While his team were being three-hitted, Nola retired 17 straight at one point, before McNeil started the eighth with a walk.

That run scoring first began when Starling Marte singled, stole second and took third on a throwing error by catcher JT Realmuto before scoring on Alonso’s bloop hit to right. After Pete’s hit, Luis Guillorme and Jeff McNeil had consecutive one-out singles in the second.
