They have done it again! The Washington Nationals completed the “Double ace whammy” by defeating Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros 12-3 on Wednesday night (10/23) in Houston to take a 2-0 World Series lead with the fans headed to DC for the next 3 games.
Both pitchers, Steven Strasburg and Justin Verlander settled in after some early runs, as Anthony Rendon doubled home two for Washington in the top of the 1st, before Alex Bregman went deep for a 2runHR in the 2nd. The game would settle into a pitchers duel as the score would remain knotted up until the 7th inning when the Nats broke the game open.
It started with a blast by Kurt Suzuki off JV and continued later in the inning, when Howie Kendrick singled home a run to get the hit parade off Houston’s bullpen started.
Asdrubal Cabrera doubled Washington’s lead by knocking home two before the 6 run 7th was capped off, with a 2run single by “MR NAT” Ryan Zimmerman that made it 8-2 Washington after the dust settled.
Houston’s offense continued to stall in this one, as Stephen Strasburg followed up his counterpart in Max Scherzer as he went 6 innings of today 2 run ball on 112 pitches.
In fact, the only difference between Scherzers and Strasburgs start was that Max went 5 innings and Stephen went 6.
With the Astros offense being shut down by Washington pitching, the Nats offense added on, as Adam Eaton went deep for two, which was followed by another RBI single by Cabrera and a solo shot by Michael A Taylor that gave Washington a 12-2 lead.
Houston would make the final score 12-3 when Martin Maldanado went deep for them in the 9th.
