One night after being pummeled by the Yankees bats, the Dodgers pitchers stymied them on Saturday (8/24) while the offense did enough to defeat the Yankees 2-1 in a wild pitchers duel at Dodger Stadium in game 2 of an epic 3 game series that has really lived up to the hype so far.
The game started with zeros on the scoreboard from both sides and it continued until the 3rd inning when Justin Turner launched a 2runHR off Yankees starter CC Sabathia to give the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.
CC would settle down after that, as he would finish with 78 pitches in 4 innings while only giving up 2runs with 7Ks added to his Saturday belt. The Yankees bullpen would relive him and go scoreless the rest of the way keeping the Yankees in it.
As for the Yankees bats, they were mostly shutdown by Tony Gonsolin as the only real damage they could muster off of him was a 424FT solo blast in the 3rd by now the Red-Hot Aaron Judge that cut the Yankees deficit down to 2-1. But just like CC, Tony would rebound and finish his outing strong as he went 5 innings of 1 run ball keeping the Dodgers in front 2-1.
The game would get interesting in the 9th as with the score still 2-1, the Dodgers went to their closer in Kenley Jansen to try and seal the deal on the Yankees in this one.
But the Yankees would not go down fighting as they had men on 1st and 2nd with one out for Urshela who hit a grounder to the shortstop Chris Taylor who went to second where Max Muncy was covering to get Gardner out at second. However as he was trying to complete the game -ending double play, he tripped and fell with the ball still in his hands allowing Torres to round 3rd and score the apparent tying run only to be strangely called back by the umpire who called time after Muncy fell.
Looking at the replay, Torres never retouched 3rd base after rounding it the first time so he would still be able to run home. Had he retouched 3rd base, he wouldn’t be able to score because the umpire called time which means you must stop whatever you are doing and go back to the base you were previously on. However Torres was never permanently on 3rd base and therefore should’ve scored the tying run but it was called back.
The umps reviewed the slide at 2B and overturned the out call as Muncy had never touched the bag. But what they didn’t review was Torres not retouching 3rd, as the bases were now loaded with one out for Mike Tauchman and Gary Sanchez, who both struck out against Jansen to end the game, as even after all that, the Yankees weren’t able to capitalize on their opportunity and lost the game.
MVP: Kenley Jansen
THOUGHTS:
Tough loss today. It was one of their games where they had a little bit more juice then us. Stinks we weren’t able to capitalize late but that’s how it goes sometimes with teams offenses. One day they are in beast mode and the next they are like the Yankees were in this one. It’s all about what you do in that 3rd game and I can’t wait for that one! German vs Kershaw should be fun!
UP NEXT:
The Yankees and Dodgers will play the finale of this thrilling 3 game series on Sunday(8/25) when Domingo German takes on Clayton Kershaw in a battle of studs this season.
Game time is 7:05 PM.
