Aside from those “Ugly players weekend jerseys” the Mets had on where players put their own nicknames on the back of new-look jerseys that most people didn’t like this year. The Mets also had an ugly offense on Sunday(8/25) as Dallas Keuchel shut them down again, as the Braves competed the series sweep and racked up win number 8 straight by defeating the Mets 2-1 in front of a sell-out crowd at Citi Field.
The sweep sinks the Mets in the NL WC race but they are still in it only 2 games back in a clustered race for the last playoff spot in the NL.
The Mets killers came out to play from Atlanta today as Josh Donaldson socked 2 solo shots off Steven Matz Who otherwise had an impressive 7 innings of 2run ball outing keeping the Mets in it.
As for the Mets bats, Dallas Keuchel shut theme down once again, as he went 7 scoreless innings while racking up 7Ks keeping the suddenly cold Mets offense at bay.
Down 2-0, the Mets made it interesting in the 9th against Braves closer Mark Melancon as Pete Alonso led the inning off with a double and would head to 3rd two batters later when a JD Davis single pit runners on the corners with one out for Todd Frazier who’s hustle to 1B on a potential game-ending double play ball scored a run and kept the game alive for Juan Lagres with Frazier being the tying run at 1st.
Juan singled which sent Frazier to 2nd, but it was all for naught as Joe Panik grounded to first to end the game as the Braves completed the 3 game sweep and won there 8th straight game.
MVP: Josh Donaldson
THOUGHTS:
This sweep is a sign of the Mets coming down to earth in my opinion. We will see how they handle the Cubs now on Tuesday after a day off Monday. Scoring 6 runs in 35 innings won’t win you games. The Mets must fix that.
As for Atlanta, wow they are a force to be reckoned with in the NL.
UP NEXT:
The Mets (67-63) will have an off day on Monday, before they welcome the 2nd NL WC team the Chicago Cubs (69-61) on Tuesday (8/27) for a big 3 game series at Citi Field.
It will be Yu Darvish for Chicago against Marcus Stroman of the Mets.
Game time is 7:10 PM.
