It’s true what they say! “ No matter, the sport, no matter their records, MDY Vs Flatbush games will live up to the hype”!
Well that’s what happened on Wednesday night ( 11/28), at the Falcons nest in Brooklyn ,NY which saw the Flatbush Falcons ( Or the Flatbush Overtime’s) oust the MDY Warriors 4-3 in an overtime thriller!!!!!
The teams were far separated in the standings with Flatbush being 2-2-1, and MDY being 1-4. But the paths both teams took to get through the first half of the season, as both teams last 3 games have been down to the wire!
The game started, and Flatbush came out flying, still riding the wave of their huge Overtime victory over YDE just two nights earlier.
Flatbush put pressure early and it seemed like MDY was hanging on by a thread , as Marc Fallas was barley making stops for the Warriors early on.
However, MDY hung in there, and ended up drawing first blood, as a shot by Joe Shamah , went off the boards and right in the slot to Joe V Gindi , who. roofed it over Ronnie Novick to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead with 12 seconds left in the first ! Which what the score was at intermission.
In the second period, it was MDY who surprisingly put their opponents on their heals early and were pressuring the Flatbush defense. But Jacob Kassin And Morris Zalta stepped up to dethrone the Warriors attack.
After that , the game turned into a goalies duel, as Fallas ( For MDY), And Novick ( For Flatbush) started making one big save after another !!
In games like these, “ If you give someone an inch , they will hit it a mile!”
That is exactly what happened, as a slashing penalty on MDY captain Isaac Maleh, put the Falcons on the power play. However, the good news for Isaac is , he didn’t need to stay in the penalty box for long , as Jacob Kassin sniped one from the point, Shortly after the penalty, and tied the game up for Flatbush!
With the momentum now on their side, Flatbush went in for the kill, literally, as Gerry Sabbagh fired a missile from half court, that gave The Falcons a 2-1 lead!
With the second period winding down, the
physicality picked up , as Jake Linado and Marc Fallas, got into a tussle in front of the net , as the MDY , Flatbush rivalry was starting to live up to its hights!!!
Finding themselves only up a goal, as the third period got underway, the Falcons knew they needed more goals, and they got one, when Jacob Kassin rifled in his second goal of the game, to give Flatbush a seemingly comfortable two-goal cushion with 7:46 to go.
But MDY had come too far across town to quit now , as long as there was time left on the clock , they weren’t going to give in.
With 6:49 left to go, Isaac Maleh capitalized on a Warriors bounce and sent one home to cut the MDY deficit in half.
Maleh wasn’t done , as with 2:38 to go , he again put one home from the slot , and just like that , it’s 3-3!
After that , the MDY vs Flatbush rivalry was at its greatest! The crowd got into it , and both goalies once again got into a stare down , and neither team could solve them ,as the game went into overtime.
In overtime, both teams were frantically, looking for that decider, but their was only one man on the court who was capable of doing so, and that was Gerry Sabbagh!
Gerry gathered the puck, and after missing a breakaway chance , stole the puck back ( Off a bounce from the ref) and roofed one home with 120 seconds left in the extra frame , to send the Flatbush faithful into a frenzy !
The win put Flatbush over the .500 mark , and dealt MDY another crushing defeat.
Both teams shared their thoughts afterwards, including the man of the. night Gerry Sabbagh!
MDY:
Joey Falack:
“ I feel we were cheated, stripped from our abilities and I think that they took away our chance”
“ Isaac Maleh is a great leader “
“ Joseph Shamah is a great player “
“ I think I played horrible, I could have played better”
Note : It’s understandable that Falack is frustrated, so I think we will give him time to calm down here, and recollect his thoughts , I comend him for having the courage , to even agree to do this interview after a crushing loss , like this , thanks Joey!!!!
Flatbush:
Gerry Sabbagh:
“ Thank you , tonight was one of the best games we played “. “ We ran more, we generated shots , we ran the forecheck and we got kept them on their toes “
“ Monday we were slower , sloppier and we weren’t working and acting like a team , so tonight gave us that boost to do better and work together.”
“ MDY really ran the dump and chase and shots from everywhere. Meanwhile, YDE would dump and hold possession , stay more organized and try to get some more quality chances.”
“ I feel amazing, after that nice shot I saw the the defender pick it up and start running . When we got that lucky bounce off the ref , I knew this is my chance , that I have to capitalize , and I did just that.”
“ I really have to give credit to Marc Fallas , who played amazing tonight and really stepped up.” “ When the puck got to me , ( On Gerry’s rocket) i saw the defense was giving me some space expecting me to move in, I saw that opportunity to take a shot and I did and I’m very fortunate that went in.”
“ I think ( Joseph) Mamiye played amazing , giving me amazing passes and getting off shots . But Marc was on the top of his game and he kept stopping us. But I think Mamiye played well as a player and as a leader.”
“ ( Jacob ) Kassin played insanely well, he took shots , made passes and played amazing defensively. Plus, he got those two huge goals for us which were beautiful.”
“ Home court tonight was great , I was lifted and energized by the crowd and I’d like to thank all of them for coming to support us tonight.”
“ It’s going be a tough game ( On next week vs MDY on the road) and it’s a bigger and different shaped court, there’s a lot less bouncing and The Warriors have the advantage so we gotta be on our game.”
“ Going forward, I think we have too keep it up and keep playing hard “ “ Plus these upcoming games are very important, but I have confidence we can get a spot in the playoffs.”
“ He ( Ronnie Novick) played amazing. He was in the zone the whole game and nothing was getting him out of it and I think he’s unbelievable.”
“ I think ( Morris ) Zalta played great , he was stopping shots from getting off getting those clears and I especially love how physical he can be despite his size, he shows he can play with the big guys and I love that.”
“ North Shore is up there along with Rambam who is a tough team to play, and I think DRS is a great team as well ( On teams to keep an eye on going forward ) and we have to keep an eye on them too.”
“ This one that we played tonight. ( I circled on my calendar, at the beginning of the season ) They are our rivals and I knew the competitiveness would be insane and it was gonna be an amazing game to play and watch.”
“ I think we did everything very well and we just have to get better chances and
bury those rebounds. Hopefully we can do that next week”
Up next :
The teams will head to the Warrior Dome on Wednesday, December 5th in the Hanukkah bowl, as the MDY Warriors (1-4-1), will look for revenge against the Flatbush Falcons (3-2-1).
