Edwin Encarnacion drove in 3 runs while JA Happ went 7 scoreless as the Yankees evened up this 4 game series at Fenway Park with a 5-1 win lowering their magic number to clinch the AL East down to 11.
Unlike the previous game, the Yankees got to the Bosox bullpen and capitalized on some Boston errors as a back to back “Sun Ball doubles” by Didi Gregorious and Gary Sanchez (2run double) put the Yankees up 2-0 before an Edwin Encarnacion sunshot capped off a 4run 4th that probably wouldn’t have happened if the sun wasn’t out in Boston on Saturday afternoon. However, either way it was a 4-0 Yankees lead which they never relinquished as JA Happ shut down the Red Sox offense as he went 7 scoreless with 7Ks continuing his torrid stretch of pitching.
In the 9th, Edwin delivered again as his RBI double gave the Yankees a 5-0 lead.
JD Martinez would break up the Yankees shutout bid with a solo shot in the 9th, but Aroldis Chapman would come on and shut the door sealing a business-like 5-1 Yankees victory.
MVP: JA Happ
