Chris Bassitt hurled five scoreless innings, Francisco Lindor set the franchise record for RBIs by a shortstop and the New York Mets demolished the Philadelphia Phillies 6-0 Sunday for their 17th win in 20 games, completing a 9-3 homestand where they outclassed the Braves, overmatched the Reds, and pulverized the Phillies previously feeling themselves.
The red-hot Daniel Vogelbach homered and Mark Canha had two hits for New York, which moved to a season-high 35 games over .500 for the first time since September 2006.
The Mets(75-40) posted their second straight shutout and league- leading 16th on the year. They’re unbeaten in 16 series against NL East opponents. It's the longest intradivision streak by a team to start a season since the Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz-Chipper Braves also went 16 in a row in 1999, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
After Mets aces Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom combined to allow just a single run over 12 innings in the first two games of the series, Bassitt (10-7, 3.27 ERA) took the baton and ran with it keeping Philadelphia off the board. The right-hander, who yielded four hits and struck out five, has gone 24 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. Since Max Scherzer returned from the injured list on July 5, Mets starters have pitched to a 2.10 ERA, by far the best in baseball during that span. LA is the next best at 2.85. Bassit has been imperative to that success, as he posses a gaudy 1.79 ERA since July. Mets starters allowed one
earned run in the series and are 8-0 with a 1.11 ERA in the team's last nine games.
Lindor singled home Brandon Nimmo, who led off the Mets first with a double. It was Lindor’s 82 RBI, surpassing José Reyes’ total of 81 set in 2006. With a 5.0 fWAR, Francisco Lindor has now moved past Dansby Swanson as the most valuable shortstop in baseball this season. He is tied with Freddie Freeman for the fifth-best mark in MLB.
New York struck for four runs in the fourth against former Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler, as Pete Alonso doubled and Canha, Luis Guillorme and James McCann notched RBI singles. This manifests the notion the Mets have the third-highest contact rate in MLB (78.6%) and the fourth-lowest called strike/whiff rate in MLB (26.3% CSW)
Wheeler, who left the Mets as a free agent after the 2020 season, allowed six runs in six innings, struck out five and saw his ERA climb to 2.92. He entered the game having allowed just 11 earned runs over his last seven starts (45 2/3 innings), however the Mets were ready for him and showed it Sunday.
Following Bassist’s departure, Trevor Williams went two innings and hasn’t permitted a run over his last 20 innings. Williams has a 1.16 ERA out of the pen for the Mets in 14 games this season. It's a nice silver lining of the otherwise ill-fated Javier Báez/Pete Crow-Armstrong trade that the Mets landed Williams. He's been the Glue Guy of their 2022 pitching staff. Rounding out “Happy hour” on a gorgeous Citi Field Sunday were Mychal Givens, Joely Rodriguez and Adam Ottavino who combined to record the games final six outs.
Over his last 25 appearances, Adam Ottavino has inherited 16 runners and allowed only one to score.
