On Wednesday, the Mets traded away Steven Matz to the Blue Jays for three prospects, who had a horrific 2020, with a 9.80 ERA, and it saw him fall out of the rotation. What this trade does, is it gives the Mets an extra $5.2 million to spend on star free agent, Trevor Bauer. Will Cohen land him, and complete the dream team? We will see. Aa for Toronto, the acquisitions of Matz via trade , and youngster Tyler Chatwood in free agency bolsters their pitching depth needs. On offense, the Bluejays inked A’s star Marcus Semien to a 1 year $18 million deal to add to a lineup that already includes Vlag Gurreo JR, Bo Bichhette, and George Springer among others. Safe to say if this team can stay healthy, these guys may give the Yankees, and rays a run for their money in the AL East, while also staking their claim over at least an AL Wild Card spot as well.
The Yankees dealt away reliver Adam Ottavino, prospect Frank German, and 850K Boston, freeing up some salary. The team also agreed to a deal with veteran submarine reliever Darren O Day, who’s coming off a season, where he pitched to a 1.19ERA with the Barves, and has a 2.51 ERA across 13 seasons. The downside to him is that he’s injury-prone, so the 1 year $2.5 million deal, is a “prove it” year for Darren, that he can stay healthy.
The bombers now have $9 million left to spend before they go over the luxury tax of $210 million, with the remains expected to be used on bringing back OF Brett Gardner in free agency.
