If you are reading this , and you are a pitcher , you know that one of the things you need do is know to get out of Innings with runners on base. Well, that loomed large on Monday ( 9/3), as the Yankees lost a key series opener on Labor day to the Oakland Athletics 6-3 in Oakland.
The loss trims the Yankees lead to 3.5 games over the A’s for the first wildcard spot, and drops them 8.5 games back behind Boston, for first place in the AL East.
Once again it was another matchup between average pitchers that did not go the Yankees way, as CC Sabathia , ( Yankees) and Trevor Cahill ( A’s) were both knocked around early and often.
However, for the Yankees, it was CC more then Cahill , and it showed early, as after the Yankees took an early 1-0 lead in the top half of the first ( On a sac fly by Aaron Hicks) , the A’s made CC work extra hard in the bottom of the first .
Sabathia threw 39 pitches, which accounted for 3 runs ( RBI single by Kris Davis , an RBI walk by Matt Olson , and an Error run off the bat of Mark Canha) 4 hits , 1 Walk and an Error ( By Miguel Andujar).
However, down 3-1, the Yankees did not go away , as Luke Voit continued his hot streak , with a game -tying 2 run HR in the top of the second to tie the game at 3!
But, in the next half inning, the Athletics came right back , as Matt Chapman lined an RBI double to left , to give Oakland the lead back at 4-3.
That lead would be extended in the 4th , as by now CC was out of the game , and AJ Cole was in . Cole served one up to the Jedi himself Jed Lowrie , who nocked in a run with an RBI single to make it 5-3.
The final run of the game would come on an HR by Mark Canha who’s homer pumped up the Oakland crowd to make the A’s lead 6-3.
After that , the jams started to pile up , as
in the top of the 7th, the Yankees had runners on first and second, and nobody but weren’t able to score , as Luke Voit, and Neil Walker struck out , before Brett Gardner flew out to end the threat , as Yusmerio Petiti ,and Ryan Butcher got out of the inning.
Then in the top of the 8th, the Yankees were staging a two out rally against Jeurys Familia , but Gary Sanchez went down swinging, and that was the end of that threat .
In the 9th, Blake Treinin came in to lock down the save , which he did, with a 1,2,3 inning.
