It was another “ Lesson learned” game for the YDE hockey team, in a heartbreaking 7-6 overtime loss to the Flatbush Falcons on Monday night (11/26) at the Falcons nest in Brooklyn ,NY.
Coming off a huge 1-0 win over North Shore, which kept their playoff hopes afloat, YDE knew that they needed another win against the Flatbush Falcons, in order to keep their push going for the last playoff spot in the East.
Coming into this game , the experts were predicting a slugfest , and while it ended up being one, it didn’t really start out that way.
YDE came out hot right out of the gate, and scored 3 goals in the first 90 seconds , as Bobby Tawil scored all three goals to give the Thunder a quick 3-0 lead !
And , Bobby his second hat trick of the year !
After another Bobby goal, the Falcons got on the board on a quick shot by Bobby Anteby .
However, a powerful slap shot by Sammy Franco gave the Thunder a 5-1 lead after 1!
However, these are the Falcons, and they are known for unbelievable comebacks , like the one they started in the second period.
It all started , with their captain Joseph Maymie leading the way , bringing some confidence, and some toughness to this Brooklyn clash, as Flatbush got to within 5-4 at the break.
In the 3rd period , YDE came out and got pressure on Flatbush, but a smart Ronnie Novick was able to keep the Thunder offense at bay , and keep the Falcons in it.
Eventually the pressure was too much for YDE to handle, and Maymie was able to to tie this game up at 5.
But hold on there fellas!!!! YDE wasn’t going to sit back , and let Flatbush run away with it ,as Ikey Dweck slipped one in and gave the Thunder a 6-5 lead, late in the third .
However, it’s Innate in Flatbush’s DNA to come back and that’s exactly what they did , as star Gerry Sabbah came through with a beautiful top shelf goal to send this contest to overtime tied at 6.
In overtime, it was back and forth , but unfortunately for YDE ,( Including a block clinic from Ikey Dweck ) this contest started and ultimately stayed in the nest, as Maymie slipped one through Thunder stopper , Charles Sulatan, ( to complete his hat trick ) and gave Flatbush a thrilling 7-6 win , which boasted their playoff hopes ,and dashed the Thunder’s.
Both teams shared their thoughts afterwards:
YDE :
Sammy Franco :
“ We need to trust our defensemen more , and need our offense-men to cover the points I’m telling you guys That’s the only reason why we lost “
Note : Sammy has every right to be frustrated , he played a great game on defense, and even helped out on offense with a goal .
However, I know Sammy, he will calm down, and at the end of the day , Flatbush made a great comeback and that’s it .
Marvin Azrak :
“ Nothing you can really say about it , I mean we did a great job of coming out hard in the first period, but we weren’t prepared for the Maroon and golds comeback “
“ After the first period, we knew that Maymie has a chance to turn this around, and unfortunately we weren’t able to stop it”
“ It stinks , because the big 3 all scored , and we still lost , we should win these games! “
“ I don’t think one guy can change this game because, tonight even for them , they had other guys contributing as well, so the fact that I didn’t play doesn’t make a difference” “ On the bench, I just need to do whatever I can to help my team win, and that’s it “.
“ Well besides Maymie , Gerry did a great job obviously, with those two goals ,Richard Cohen , and Bobby Anteby , did a great job with a couple of goals , and hats off to Ronnie Novick , who really did a great job adjusting after the first 12 minutes “.
“ One game at a time , including seeing these guys again, so I think the guys will be extra motivated to win it next time “. “ We have five games left , to make it happen, so let’s do this !”
Note :
Great defense by Jacob Sutton , and Steven Shemuala tonight, as well as Ray Shamah , who showed some progress in getting back to his old self , after missing last weeks game against the Stars.
Isaac Balsinao was placed on the 30 Day DL this week, due to a broken arm , he hopes to return on January 3rd against the MDY Warriors at the Warrior dome .
Flatbush:
Morris Zalta :
“ We knew we were getting Mamymie back ( After he wasn’t able to play in the first period, to some off the court business) , so we had confidence in the comeback and we talked about how we should change defensively”.
“ I think Gerry and Maymie both played great and Joe was a great leader by example on the court and off the court”.
“ In the locker room he ( Maymie ) brings a sense of humor , but he is serious when he needs to be” “ He also pumps us up with chants and speeches”.
“ Gerry does a great job doing that as well”
“He ( Novick ) realized that he needs to position himself better and when he did , he made those saves also the defense realized that we have to step up and not just rely on Ronnie , so we both improved after that first period “ “ But mostly Ronnie picked up his game significantly”
“ I think they played great, they really gave it to us in the first , but they started getting too comfortable with the lead and we came back”
“ I feel great but I think I need to work on my game a little bit. And I'm hoping we could keep this momentum going forward against MDY ( On Wednesday) , and for the rest of the year”
Up next :
The 1-3-1 Thunder will enjoy their all star break , and then give their playoff hopes , one last hurrah , when they host the DRS Wildcats (1-2) on Tuesday December 11th.
The Falcons (2-2-1) will get right back at it on Wednesday night, when they host the MDY Warriors (1-4).
Jacob Kassin, and Morris Zalta be facing their former team , in that game !
