Sometimes a change of scenery can really help a team out. That was no different for the New York Yankees on Thursday (4/4), as 4HRS lifted them past the Baltimore Orioles in an 8-5 thriller at Camden Yards.
The Yankees came into this game with 11 guys on the Injured List, and it didn't help when the Orioles jumped all over Yankees starter James Paxton early and often. But the Yankees settled down, as their long balls, and bullpen helped them rally for a much-needed victory.
The Orioles came out flying early on in their home opener, as they wasted no time getting their fans into it, as Jonathan Villar socked a leadoff HR to right field, which gave the Orioles a quick 1-0 lead. That HR shook Paxton's confidence, as four batters later, he found himself in a bases loaded one out jam. Instead of keeping calm, Paxton got nervous, and physically showed it, when a balk was called, which forced in a run to give the Orioles a 2-0 lead.
It only got worse from there, as Paxton uncorked a wild pitch to yield home another run, and give the O's a 3-0 lead after just one inning of play.
But Paxton composed himself, as he only allowed one run for the rest of his " 5.1 innings of four-run ball" outing while keeping his team in the game.
As for the Yankees offense, they were coming off a game where they whiffed a franchise record 18 times, in an embarrassing 2-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers. But in this contest, the Bronx Bombers returned to their old mashing ways, as Gleyber Torres went deep in the third, to get the Yankees on the board, and cut the Baltimore lead to 3-1.
Three innings later, finding themselves down 4-1 ( After a Renato Nunez RBI single), the Yankees woke up. It all started with Gary Sanchez going deep to cut the O's lead down to 4-2.
Then after Greg Bird, and DJ LeMahiue notched a couple of two-out singles, Gleyber Torres stunned all of Baltimore with a two strike, two out, a three-run bomb to give the Yankees a 5-4 lead, and inflate Yankees fans spirits everywhere.
With the lead, the Yankees turned to their bullpen. Tommy Kahlne, and Zack Britton, combined for 2.2 scoreless innings to send the game to the ninth inning, with the Yankees up by one.
Needing insurance runs, Luke void came to the rescue, as he snuck a big 3 run HR over the left field wall, to give the Yankees an 8-4 lead, and put the nail in the coffin for the Orioles.
In there last licks, the O's went down against Aroldis Chapman, s the Yankees sealed a much-needed confidence booster with an 8-4 win.
STATS TO KNOW:
Gleyber Torres is the youngest Yankee since Joe DiMaggio to have 4 hits, three extra-base hits, and two HRs in one game. Gleyber went 4 for 4, with 2 doubles, 2HRs, 4RBIS, and the go-ahead blast in the 6th.
THOUGHTS:
Man did we needed that! We are 3-4 now and hopefully are at the beginning of what will be a huge run. Let's keep the good vibes rolling on Saturday!
