Oriole-killer Gleyber Torres lived up to his now popular nickname once again on Monday night (8/12) as his 2HR, 6RBI game propelled the Yankees to an 11-8 victory over the Baltimore Orioles to complete their second Doubleheader Sweep this season over the O’s and their 5th of 2019.
Torres’s two blasts gives him an astounding 13HRs against Baltimore alone this season!!
The Yankees got to the Orioles pitching early and often, as with the bases loaded and one out in the 1st, Brett Gardner cleared the bases with a 3run triple that gave the Yankees an early 3-0 lead.
That lead would be extended in the second on an Orioles throwing error that would allow Bryveic Valera to score and extend the Yankees lead to 4.
Joe Mantiply came to relive Chad Green after 1.1 scoreless innings from him and in his MLB debut, Joe gave the Yankees length in this “Bullpen game” by going 3 innings, despite giving up 3runs in the 3rd on a Hanser Alberto RBI Groundout and a Trey Mancini 2run blast that cut the Yankees lead down to 4-3.
When Joe departed with 1 out in the 5th, another guy making his MLB debut in Brady Laile came in and on his second pitch, induced an inning-ending double play that fired up him, his family and the Yankee crowd.
Brady would proceed to go 2.2 innings, giving the Yankees length despite giving up 3runs just like Joe.
The Yankees bats would continue to come alive as the game went on, using the HR ball to their advantage, as Mike Ford went deep in the 4th to give the Yankees a 5-3 lead, before Gleyber Torres went deep for two 3run bombs in the 5th and 6th , that extended the Yankees lead to “Blowout range” at 11-3.
The Orioles would make it interesting late, as Hanser Alberto would go deep for a 3run bomb off Laile that would cut the Yankees lead down to 11-6.
Then in the 9th, Nestor Cortes JR looked to continue his success from the 8th inning when he left it unscathed, but some unfortunate bounces loaded the bases with one out, as Adam Ottavino relived Cortes, and though he gave up 2 runs (That were charged to Cortes), he was able to lock the 11-8 Yankees win down and complete the Doubleheader Sweep of Baltimore.
MVP: Gleyber Torres
THOUGHTS:
GLEYBER IS INSANE!!!
He literally owns the O’s and it’s great to see! Great job out of Laile and Mantiply in their MLB debuts giving us length out of the pen and showing their potential.
Nice hustle by Gardy in the 1st and a nice bomb from Ford too! We swept the Doubleheader, now let’s sweep the series!
STATS TO KNOW:
Gleyber Torres now has 13 HRs against the Orioles this season. That is most by a single player against a single opponent in a single season in the Divisional Era (1969) in MLB history!
Gleyber Torres now has 5 multi-HR games against Baltimore this season. The most by any player, against any team, in a single season in MLB history!
Gleyber Torres has more home runs against the Orioles this season (13) than Chris Davis has in total this year (9).
The Yankees now have swept 5 out of 6 doubleheader’s this season (They split the other one against the Mets) with 2 of those sweeps coming against the O’s.
The Yankees are now 15-2 against the O’s this year and have won 14 straight.
Those 14 straight wins are the most in a row against a single team in a single season in the Divisional Era in Franchise history!
MANTIPLY, VALERA, LALIE TO MINORS:
The Yankees had called up Valera as their “26th man” for today’s doubleheader so it’s no surprise that he was sent down.
As for Brady and Mantiply, the Yankees need some fresh arms for their pen. We will see who they call up.
FAN OPINIONS:
Eli Reuben:
Great win! Offense was great, Gleybar litterally owns the Orioles, and good pitching from the new guys as well! Them making it 11-8 got me a little nervous, but it was all good in the end.
Nice DH sweep! Now let’s sweep the series!!
UP NEXT:
The Yankees have two more games against the Orioles this season with one of them being on Tuesday night (8/13) when Domingo German will head to the mound for the Yankees against John Means of the Orioles.
Game time is 7:05PM.
