The magical ride that is the 2019 Yankees continued on Sunday( 9/1) as they rallied to walk off the A’s once again 5-4 to take the series and keep their home series streak alive.
This contest was a pitchers duel for a majority of the game as JA Happ went 6 scoreless innings for the Yankees while Sean Manena went 5 scoreless for Oakland in his 1st start of the year.
Just like Saturday, it was a “Battle of the Bullpens” as Ryan Dull entered the game in the 7th for the Yankees and promptly gave up 3 runs as a Sheldon Neuse 2run double and a Josh Phegly RBI groundout gave Oakland a 3-0 lead.
In the 8th, Marcus Semien seemed to put the final nail in the Yankees coffin as he went deep to give Oakland a commanding 4-0 lead.
But if there is one thing about these 2019 Yankees, it’s that you can’t count them out. They loaded the bases with 0 outs in the bottom of the 8th for Gleyber Torres, who was inches away from a game -tying grand slam but had to settle for a sac fly instead that got the Yankees on the board and cut the A’s lead down to 4-1. Later in the inning, Didi Gregorious singled home two more runs with 2 outs that cut the Yankees deficit down to one at 4-3 heading into the bottom of the 9th against Liam Hendricks of the A’s.
Brett Gardner led the inning off looking for a fastball and he didn’t miss it as he socked a game-tying HR Into the right field seats that tied the game at 4 and had Yankee Stadium rocking!
The next man up “Blew the top off” as rookie and lifelong Yankee fan Mike Ford walloped a Walk off HR sending the Yankees to an improbable 5-4 victory.
