Coming into this series, the Yankees knew they needed to take at least one game in this series like last week if they wanted to keep a safe distance between them and the Red Sox in the AL East. But now that the Yankees got that “Win” out of the way on Friday night (8/2) with a 4-2 victory in the Bronx. They can now focus on winning the series and expanding on their 11.5 game lead over Boston.
James Paxton started for the Yankees, as he looked to rebound from a woeful “ innings of 7 run ball” outing against Boston last Friday in Fenway.
That mission didn’t get off to a good start, as JD Martinez socked a 2runHR to left in the 1st to give the Bosox an early 2-0 lead. But Paxton settled down, and was phenomenal, as he kept Boston’s offense at bay the rest of the game, and finish led with a stellar 6 innings of 2 run ball outing keeping the Bombers in it.
Eduardo Rodriguez started for Boston, and like Paxton didn’t fair too well in the first, as the Yankees got to him early and often, loading the bases with one out for Gleyber Torres, who blasted a Grand Slam into the seats, sending the Stadium into a Frenzy giving the Yankees a 4-2 lead!
But after that, Eduardo would settle down, and go 6 innings with Gleybers Grando being his only blemish.
With both starters out of the game, it came down to a “Battle of the Bullpens”, with the Yankees coming out on top, as Adam Ottavino, Zack Brittion And Aroldis Chapman made sure the 1st inning Slam by Gleyber was all the offense the Yankees needed, as they hung on for a 4-2 win with DJ LeMahieu (Who returned from his groin injury) making an outstanding leaping catch to finish it off.
MVP: Gleyber Torres
INJURY NEWS:
The Yankees welcomed back Brett Gardner on Friday as he came off the IL, as well as DJ LeMahieu Who missed the last 7 games due to a groin injury.
