Aaron Judge went deep once again, and in his first start in two seasons, Jordan Montgomery handcuffed the Red Sox bats with 5.2 innings of 1 run ball, as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox 5-1 Friday night (7/31), in their home opener at Yankee Stadium.
The scorning began in the 3rd, when Micheal Chavis took Monty deep for Boston’s lone run of the game, as the tide shifted the Yankees way from there. It started when Aaron Judge doubled up Kevin Pillar on a 9-3 putout, before going deep himself off Bosox starter Ryan Weber in the bottom half of the frame, to put the Yankees ahead 2-1. The Yankees would get insurance runs in the 4th and 8th, with Gio Urshela and Brett Gardner going deep, with Gardy’s bomb being a 2run HR for his first hit of the season.
The bullpen trio of Adam Ottavino, Chad Green (2 scoreless) and Jonothan Holder locked the game down in relief of Montgomery, securing the 5-1 win for the Yankees.
Game 2 of this series will take place on Saturday evening at 7:05PM, when Masahiro Tanaka makes his debut for the Yankees, against Zack Godley of the Red Sox.
