On Sunday night, Aaron Judge provided the power boost that NY and this Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, had been missing due to the pandemic, by blasting 2 tide-changing home runs as part of a 5RBI day, while doing it in historic fashion, as the Yankees rallied for a thrilling 9-7 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium to complete the 3 game weekend sweep.
The night didn’t start well for the Yankees, as James Paxton got tattooed for a 1st inning 2run HR by Xander Bogarts to give Boston a 2-0 lead; which was then wiped away when Aaron Judge went deep in the 2nd for a 3run bomb, making it his 5th straight game in which he has homered, and most importantly, gave the Yankees a 3-2 lead. However, RBI singles by Rafael Devers and Bogarts, as well as a misplay by Miguel Andujar In left field on an RBI single by Christian Vazquez gave the Red Sox the lead back at 5-3. That would be it for Paxton, as Micheal King would relive him and make his second appearance of the season and his 3rd of his young MLB career.
The Yankees offense wouldn’t go down quietly, as back to back RBI doubles by Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela in the bottom half of the 3rd, evened the game at 5.
After a scoreless 4th, this 5-5 deadlock would be broken open by another Xander Bogarts blast, that gave Boston a 6-5 advantage, but only for the Yankees to strike back again with a Luke Voit solo shot to even this game at 6. Adam Ottavino would relive King, but serve up a go-ahead homer by Rafael Devers in the 7th, that once again put the Red Sox out in front 7-6.
However, this Yankees offense had come to far to quit now, and weren’t going too, as a pinch-hit 2 out walk and stolen base by Mike Tauchman in the 8th, set the stage for DJ LeMahieu, who’s RBI single tied the game, before a mammoth 2run homer from Aaron Judge put them Yankees out in front for good 9-7. The 9th inning, would see Zack Brittion lock down the save, as the Yankees completed a 3 game sweep of the Red Sox and now head into a 4 game makeup series with the Philadelphia Phillies, with a 7-1 record.
MVP: Aaron Judge, as his 2 homer 5 RBI game, not only propelled the Yankees to victory, it also notched him some history, as he became the first Yankee since Alex Rodriguez in 2007, to homer in 5 straight games and hit 6 homers in those 5 games, while also joining A-Rod as the next Yankee to hit 6 homers in the first 8 games of a season.
UP NEXT: The Yankees will makeup their 4 game series against the Phillies that was supposed to be played last week but was postponed due to the Marlins virus outbreak, will be made up this week starting Monday at Yankee Stadium, when Gerrit Cole will face Jake Arretia. Game time is 7:05PM.
