In front of a sell-out crowd on a freezing Saturday night (11/23) at the Warrior Dome, the YDE JV Hockey Thunder defeated the MDY Warriors 9-3 in a game that felt like a “Yankees-Red Sox” clash with the amount of physicality between the two Brooklyn rivals.
After a 30 minute delay, due to the Warrior Dome not being ready for play at 7:00, the teams hit the court and MDY came out flying, as 78 seconds in, superstar Joe V Gindi sniped one past YDE goalie Jacob Sutton to give the Warriors a fast 1-0 lead. The Thunder would rebound however, as after constant pressure being put on former YDE , now Warriors goalie Saully Esses, the visitors finally broke through, as leading scorer Bobby Tawil pounced on a loose puck and sent it home to tie the game at 1.
Late in the period, Ikey Dweck sent one home to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead after 1.
In the second period, the physically picked up a few notches, as sticks, bodies and mostly penalties were flying all over the place, especially for the Thunder who had 4 straight penalties and managed to kill off all 4 with some great defense by Sammy Franco and Ikey Dweck.
At one point, YDE found themselves with the man advantage and pounced , as Franco socked one in agains his former squad to double the Thunder lead with his raw emotion after the goal, saying how much that meant to him and the team with the way this contest was flowing.
When the frame came to a close, the Thunder led 3-1 and despite taking 4 penalties in this period, MDY had 0 shots on goal.
The 3rd period was when YDE really showed what they were made of, as they weathered the intense physicality that carried over into the final stanza and lit the lamp 6 times to salt the game away.
It started with some offensive pressure and the puck bouncing right out to Ikey Dweck who socked one home to extend the visitors lead. Then moments later, it happened again, as Dweck hammered one home to complete the hat trick and give the Thunder a 5-1 lead.
This was happening, despite the fact that the Thunder had to go on the penalty kill one more time which they killed off to complete a 0/6 night for MDY on the man advantage.
The goals kept on coming for YDE, as Bobby Tawil slid one home, before Sammy Franco rifled 2 straight goals (With one being on the PP to complete a 2/5 night on the man advantage for the guests) into the net to stretch the Thunder lead to 8-1 and complete the hat trick.
Marvin Azrak and Sammy Cohen would get in on the fun, as they hit up for Cohen goal with Azrak getting the assist to make it 9-1 Thunder.
In the final minutes, backup goalie Nehoriai Avikasis relived Jacob Sutton who in his 1st start of the season, was brilliant in keeping the Warriors attack at bay.
MDY would get two more goals, with Leon Bardavid and Joe V Gindi getting the credit, but in the end it was YDE who was just too much, as they improved to 3-1 on the season with a 9-3 rout of their Brooklyn Rivals, in the Warriors.
