When you do something and you want to do it again, you must “Rinse , wash and repeat”. That is what the Yankees did in game 1 of their doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox, as they got to Chris Sale once again led by DJ LeMahieu, while Domingo German proved that last Sunday Nights performance wasn’t a fluke, as he baffled the Red Sox again in a 9-2 Yankees victory.
DJ got things started in the first, as he went deep for a leadoff HR that gave the Yankees an early 1-0 lead. Andrew Benentendi would get it right back however, as he went deep in the second to even the game at 1. German was brilliant after that, as he only let up one more run the rest of the afternoon (A Jackie Bradley JR HR in the 6th) in 7 innings of work, allowing the Bombers offense to get to Sale and dominate.
Through the first 3 innings, Chris Sale looked like he was getting back to his dominant self mixing up his pitches to get outs. But in the 4th, it all unraveled, as some controversial calls by home plate umpire Mike Estabrook helped the Yankees load the bases for the rookie Bryveic Valera who slapped a single into center field that scored a run and gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
The Yankees continued the onslaught after Red Sox manger Alex Cora was ejected for arguing balls and strikes, as Brett Gardner drove in 2 runs with an RBI singe to right that kept the inning alive for LeMahieu, who blasted his second HR of the game into right for a 3runHR that have the Yankees a commanding 7-1 lead.
Aaron Judge would keep the onslaught going with a double, before scoring on an Edwin Encarnacion RBI single that gave the Yankees an 8-1 lead after 4, as Chris Sale didn’t survive the inning not only because he was giving up all those runs but because he was upset with the strike zone Estabrook was giving him and he was too tossed following his manger to the showers.
Edwin would rack up another RBI in the 6th, as he drove in Brett Gardner with an RBI single to make it 9-2 Yankees. But in the 8th, Edwin would become the latest Yankee on the IL, as he left the game after being hit by a pitch right up in the wrist, that put him on the IL with a right wrist fracture.
This took a little bit of the happiness out of a dominant 9-2 Yankees win to open the Twin-Bill.
MVP: DJ LeMahieu
INJURY REPORT:
The Yankees recalled Mike Ford to take Edwin’s spot on the roster.
Encarnacion is expected to rejoin the team in 3-5 weeks.
THOUGHTS:
It stinks that Edwin got hurt, as I was really loving the production that he was giving the Yankees on the offensive side. But now with him and Voit out, Ford is the #nextmanup.
Other then that, what a win! We got to Sale again, Domingo was phenomenal again and it really is amazing to have DJ back!
Let’s clinch the series and sweep the Doubleheader in game 2!!
LEFTOVERS:
Jonothan Holder pitched 2 scoreless innings to finish off the win in relief of German.
UP NEXT:
The Yankees will look to sweep the doubleheader on Saturday night (4/3) in a battle of the openers, as Chad Green will go for the Yankees against Brian Johnson of the Red Sox.
Game time is 7:05PM
