LIVE FROM THE OPEN!

Updated: Oct 18, 2019

Guess what everyone! I’m at the US Open! Here inside Arthur Ashe Stadium For Day 1 of the Quarterfinals. We came in, walked around the grounds, checked out some junior tennis players up close on the other courts and are now here a little bit early inside Arthur Ashe Stadium where no 5 seed Elian Scitolina leads 16 seed Jo Konta 6-4,3-2. After this match will be the match me and my family came to see. Stan Wawrinka vs Danil Medvedev.

Don’t worry though, I won’t let this match go to waste here. It’s a good one with Elina up by a set and a break so let’s get into it!

ELINA LEADS 4-3:

The crowd is into it as Konta breaks before getting broken back in a couple of grueling games. 2 more games from the finish line is Svitolina.

ELINA LEADS 5-4:

She fights off some nice defense from Konta and now leads 5-3. Konta however, isn’t ready to go home yet as she saves two match points and puts the pressure and Svitolina to close out the match.

ELINA WINS 6-4 6-4:

Konta had her chances in that final game, including a break point but Svitolina rallies to close it out and win the match in straight sets. She is now headed to the semifinals and will face the winner of the Serena-Wang match tonight on Thursday.

WAWRINKA VS MEDVEDEV:

This is a pro Wawrinka crowd as the players take the court. It’s a beautiful sunny day and a great day for Tennis! The 5 seed Medvedev won the toss and selected to receive which means the 23rd seeded Wawrinka will serve first. I am sitting in section 117 row 1 with my family Away we go!

MEDVEDEV LEADS 2-1:

He breaks Wawrinka right away before both players hold resulting in a 2-1 Medvedev lead at the changeover. Exciting first 3 games with the crowd into it and clearly on Wawrinkas side.

MEDVEDEV LEADS 3-2:

Both players hold here. But I love the way they are making each other work for their holds so far. Hopefully they keep this up as this match rolls on.

MEDVEDEV LEADS 4-3:

Danil is doing a great job of holding serve here though looking a little out of shape. Stan will have to dig deep here if he wants to get back in this.

MEDVEDEV LEADS 5-4:

Once again, exciting tennis, but same results. This match is as close as the score says right now, could go either way in my opinion. One point may swing the whole set.

WAWRINKA LEADS 6-5:

The crowd roars as Stan breaks! He then holds and leads 6-5. He is pumped along with the crowd as Medvedev will now need to hold to send this first set into a tiebreaker.

6-6:

Medvedev fights off some great defense by Wawrinka and forces a 1st set tiebreaker.

3-3:

Medvedev raced out to a 3-0 lead, but Stan has come right back to tie it at the change of ends! Back and forth we go! You can feel the tension in the air here at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The crowd is really into it!

6-6:

Medvedev gets the mini break and finds himself serving for the set up 5-4. But he gives both points away and Stan has taken 6-5 lead with set point on his racket. Amazingly, Medvedev has 9 double faults in this match so far and it’s only the 1st set! Come to thing of it, it’s kind of crazy that he has made it this far in the set. Anyway, Stan serves and has a chance to put the set away but misses long with the forehand and we are tied at 6. You could feel that one as the crowd let’s out a big “Awwww” after that one.

MEDVEDEV TAKES 1ST SET 7-6(6):

Wawrinka misses with the forehand again giving Medvedev a 7-6 lead, who doesn’t give the set back this time as he finishes a thrilling tiebreaker off with an ace and takes the 1st set over Stan in 59 minutes.

I hope the second set is like what we just saw because that was an amazing display of tennis there.

MEDVEDEV LEADS 7-6, 3-0:

Danil has taken full control of this match as he breaks Stan early once again and continues to hold serve. He leads by a set and a break.

MEDVEDEV WINS SECOND SET 6-3:

Some back and forth tennis games with great rallies hi lighted this set but the last 7 games of this 2nd frame produced the same result with the player holding serve. Unlike the first set, Medvedev maintains his break lead and takes the second set in 33 minutes. To be honest with you, I feel like this match is closer then it looks and I think the crowd knows it too because they are hanging around. This should be a great 3rd set. Buckle up because here we go!

WAWRINKA LEADS 3-0:

That’s what I’m talking about! Stan breaks through and takes a commanding 3-0 lead! The crowd is back into it here cheering on Stan to make this comeback. It starts by holding serve and winning this set.

STAN TAKES 3RD SET 6-3:

He does! In a grueling final game, Wawrinka saves 3 break points and finally converts on his 5th set point to force a 4th set! The crowd Is It’s loudest all afternoon now with Stan on the comeback trail.

MEDVEDEV LEADS 3-0:

That should do it. Medvedev keeps his cool and wrestles the momentum back from Stan for a quick 3-0 lead.

MEDVEDEV LEADS 4-1:

Danil I believe is winning the crowd over now with the way he is keeping his cool and his creativity changing up his serve speeds and style of play to confuse a rattled Wawrinka here. He has went from a “Stay back on the baseline” to a “Serve and volly at the net” out of nowhere throughout this match. Two more games and the 23 year old is headed to the final 4.

MEDVEDEV WINS 7-6,6-3,3-6, 6-1:

He’s done it! Medvedev has won the crowd over and has won the match in a little over 2:30 hours. Hats off to Wawrinka, but it was Medvedev today who was just too much. Up next for him is the winner of tonight’s Rodger-Dimitrov match in the semifinals on Friday.

That match concludes our time here at the US Open! It was a lot of fun and I thank my mom for bringing us out here!

SERENA ROLLS ON:

Back home and watching on the TV screen as Serena Williams is into the semifinals with a 6-1,6-0 win in only 45 minutes over Qiang Wang. That may have been the quickest tennis match outright I have ever seen! Wow.

Up next for Serena is Elinia Svitolina in the semifinals on Thursday.

RODGER TAKES 1ST SET 6-3:

The living legends are all business tonight a Rodger gets the early break and takes the 1st set from Grigor Dimitrov 6-3.

GRIGOR TAKES 2ND SET 6-4.

A few years ago, Dimitrov was nicknamed “Baby Fed” because his style was so similar to Rodgers and that he was number 3 in the world. But since then, he has gone in a major slump and dropped to 78 in the world including having lost his last 7 of 8 matches coming into this US Open. However, tonight he is looking like vintage Grigor as he took a double break lead over Federer at 5-2 and then just when it seemed like Fed would get back in the set, Grigor broke him and took the second set 6-4. We have another good one on Ashe everyone! Settle in!

FED TAKES 3RD SET 6-3:

It was on serve until out of nowhere Rodger raised his game winning the last 4 games of the 3rd set to take it 6-3 and now leads by 2 sets to 1. The obviously pro-Federer crowd is ramped up over there on Ashe!

GRIGOR LEADS 4-3:

What a game that was! Up 4-2, Grigor was looking to take a double break lead on Federer, but Rodger saved 7 break points and on the 5th game point, converts to stay within a break at 4-3. That was the best game of the tournament so far and the crowd loved every minute of it!

GRIGOR TAKES 4TH SET 6-4:

Grigor holds serve and sends this match to a 5th set winning it 6-4. Lot of tension out there on Ashe right now.

GRIGOR STUNS FEDERER 3-6,6-4,3-6,6-4, 6-2:

Grigor has done it! He has finally defeated Rodger Federer as he is now 1-7 against him in his career. This crowd is stunned as Grigor is pumped up! He is headed to the semifinals as Rodger is left stunned. Up next for him is Danil Medvedev on Friday in what should be an interesting semifinal matchup.

With this loss, the US Open semifinals will once again not feature Rodger Federer for the 3rd straight year. It is also the first time since 2017 Rodger Federer did not win a grand slam at all this year. Wow!
