This was the Mets moment. Steven Matz was having his best road start of the season and the Mets had outlasted an unexpected 6 scoreless innings start from Dallas Keuchel and had gotten to the Braves bullpen just now in the top half of the 7th when JD Davis blooped a 2run single to score Pete Alonso and Amed Rosario to give the Mets a 2-1 lead.
All they needed were 9 more outs and they would’ve turned the momentum in this pivotal 3 game series at Sun Trust Park against the Braves in Atlanta.
One would figure that the Mets
path to victory now would be to put starter Steven Matz (Who was at 79 pitches) for one more inning and then go to one of the best relivers in baseball Seth Lugo for the final 2 innings to close it out.
Lugo did come in... for the bottom of the 7th inning.
Now watching the game, I was shocked “Did I miss something?” I thought to myself why did Mets manger Mickey Callaway put Seth in for the 7th inning? He’s not a 3 inning guy? If he would put in a reliver in, maybe put setup men Jeury’s Familia, or Luis Avilan in the game, have one of them do the 7th and Lugo for the 8th and 9th.
But either way, no matter what inning you would’ve put him in, Lugo simply didn’t have it in this one, as the Braves threw a single party on him and when they were done, they had scored 5 runs to take a 6-2 lead which was the difference in the game.
The Mets tried to bail out their star closer on a “Rare off night” in the 9th as Luis Guillorme and Amed Rosario notched RBI singles. But with the bases loaded and one out, Wilson Ramos and Michael Conforto struck out against EX-Met Jerry Blevins as the Braves clinched the series with a 6-4 win.
MVP: Jerry Blevins.
THOUGHTS:
Quick thanks to Jon Heyman for this because he took the words right out of my mouth.
“Callaway’s positivity is a main factor in Mets resurgence but Matz should have stayed for 7th up 2-1. Can’t expect Mets pen to go 3 scoreless. Even if Lugo goes 2, who’d pitch the 9th? In any case, Lugo’s rare off night was likely going to doom them whether it was the 7th or 8th.”
Really all there is for the Mets to do is try to win Thursday night against Julio Teheran and salvage the final game of this 3 game series.

Listen, tonight was obviously a tough loss, but we had this coming after that 8 game win streak we had. But look on the bright side, There’s always another game tomorrow!!
AUTHORS QUESTION:
Do you blame Mickey or Lugo in that 7th?
ANSWER:
Micky because he should know better. I think he was too over anxious there. Matz was at 79 pitches and was the best I’ve seen him in a long time. But you have to give credit to the Braves for that comeback. They really executed against Lugo there.
Just try to get up and win on Thursday. I’ll take 1 of 3 if we can get it.
