MEET THE NEW QUEEN OF NY... SABRINA INESCU!

What does going 17-51 over the last 2 seasons get you? The first overall pick and a player who some people say is the next “Kobe Bryant” of the WNBA in terms of her competitiveness. That’s Sabrina Ionescu, who the New York Liberty selected with the first pick in Friday’s WNBA draft. In her four years at Oregon, Sabrina rewrote the NCAA history books, while also earning the admiration of athletes like Kobe Bryant (Before he passed away), Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. She became the first player ever for men and women, to eclipse 2,000+ points, 1,000+ rebounds and 1,000+ assists, all while setting a record with 26 triple-doubles this past season. Sabrina is also a two-time NCAA MVP and a two-time All-American player of the year. However, she leaves Oregon feeling wonderous, as she and the rest of her Ducks teammates are left to wonder what would’ve happened should this season’s NCAA tournament had not been canceled due to the current world-wide pandemic, with the reigning back to back MVP and the best player in College Basketball on their side. After she was drafted, Nike swooped in and signed her to a sneaker deal.

She will now try and handle the challenge, of playing in NY. Welcome to New York Sabrina, you have earned the right to play here with all of the acolades you earned and the way you handled yourself at Oregon, leading your Ducks to stardom throughout your career there, by taking a school that wasn’t known for basketball, into the 2019 Final Four and two other Elite Eight appearances. On behalf of New York, I hope we can look back and say that the first-ever number 1 overall pick in Liberty history, sure lived up to the hype.

BRYANT’S HONORED:

Before Sabrina was selected, their was an honorary pick spent by the WNBA on Kobe’s daughter Gigi, who was also a victim in the tragic helicopter crash in January.

LIBERTY TOP NIGHT WITH OTHER PLAYERS:

Aside from Ionescu, the Liberty drafted some nice role players in Megan Walker (NO 9) Jazmine Jones(12) , Kyle Shock (Round 2, pick 13),and Lennnoa Odom (Round 2, pick 15). They also acquired Stephani Talbot from the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for NO 12 overall pick, Joycelen Wllioughby.

BARCLAYS CENTER HAS ANOTHER SUPERSTAR:

Move over KD and Kyrie, there’s a new superstar coming to Barclays Center, and her name is Sabrina Ionescu!

By the fall, Barclays Center should also have two new head coaches, as the Nets look for a full-time coach to replace Kenny Atkinson , while the Liberty have rookie head-coach Wilt Hopkins.
