MESSI, RONALDO FALL SHORT IN KNOCKOUT STAGE.

On Saturday (  6/30) , The two best soccer players in the world  , Lionel Messi , and Cristano Ronaldo were ousted in the round of 16 as France beat Argentina 4-3, and Uruguay beat Portugal 2-1.

Coming into Saturday , both players needed a win, if they wanted to have that coveted matchup  we have all been waiting for, Messi vs Ronaldo in the quarter finals. But it wasn't meant to be, here is what happened.

FRANCE VS ARGENTINA

This was the first match of the day yesterday, and it was  incredible. It only took for 13 minutes for France to strike first as  Antonione Griezmann converted on a penalty shot to make it 1-0 France.

But Argentina would rally, and come back as they would score two quick goals, to take the lead 2-1!

First, Angelo Di Maria, put some spin a shot from far out to tie the game, then Gabriel Macarada deflected a shot from Messi into the net , and it was  2-1 Argentina.

But once the second half started, France would show why they are the better team, as they blitzed Argentina for 3unanswered  goals in 11 minutes. First, Benjamin Pavarad scored from far out to tie the game , then just 7 minutes later , Kylian Mbappe, sent one into the net to give France the lead at 3-2. France wasn't done and scored again 4 minutes later as Kylian  Mbappe would pump home  his second goal of the game to give France a 2 goal cushion at 4-2.

But Argentina wouldn't give up and show that they got here for a reason as Sergio Aguero just like last game , gave Argentina hope, as he scored in the 93rd minute to make it a 4-3 game. But that wasn't enough as Argentina's last ditch effort would fall short and France survived 4-3 and advanced to the Quarterfinals on  Friday.

URUGUAY VS PORTUGAL:

This was a heartbreaking loss for Ronaldo and Co. as Portugal had a lot of chances but weren't able to convert on them and Uruguay capitalized . Edinsion Cavani,  got Uruguay off to a roaring start , as he headed one home 7 minutes into the game! Portugal however , would not go away as Pepe would head one into the net for Portugal, in the 55th minute to tie the game,  but Uruguay would only come right back as Cavani headed one home again to give Uruguay a 2-1 lead in the 62nd minute. That was a lead that they would never relinquish as the Portugal surge was no match for Uruguyas' defense as they were able to hold on , and beat Portugal 2-1 while setting up a date with France in the quarter finals on Friday July 6th.

it was a heartbreaking end to another unforgettable World Cup from these two players who will have to wait another 4 years to get that trophy they so desperately have coveted their whole careers.
