MLB RECAP 7/29: “MUSICAL BASEBALL” +DODGERS-ASTROS BOUT.

Change of plans everyone, the Yankees are headed to Camden Yards in Baltimore. On Tuesday, the MLB announced in light of the Marlins COVID-19 outbreak that, all of Miami games through Sunday (The 4 game home and home series against the Orioles, and the upcoming weekend series against the Nationals), and ultimately all of the Phillies games through Friday( The 4 game series with the Yankees and game 1 of a 3 game Blue Jays series that will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Saturday), have been postponed. Meanwhile, to create “schedule flexibility” later on in the season, as in next week, the Yankee and Orioles will meet for a two game series Wednesday and Thursday at Camden Yards.

The Yankees were supposed to be batting the Phillies this week, but due to the Marlins outbreak and the fact that Philadelphia shared the field with them, therefore requiring extensive testing and quarantine, that will not be happening at least for this week. As for next week, the Yankees were supposed to clash with the O’s in Baltimore for 3 games, ironically at the same time the Phillies were set to meet the Marlins in Miami. But those games will now likely be called of, in exchange for the 4 game Orioles-Marlins and Yankees-Phillies tilts to take place.

The weekend series between the Nationals and Marlins, and next weeks bout between the Phils and Marlins, isn’t likely to made up, as MLB has said it won’t force 60 games if it means risking the health of the players and scheduling “Unnecessary doubleheaders”, and of it comes down to it at the end of the season, will go by winning percentage to see who has the better record, should a playoff spot be on the line. From a Yankees perspective, the scratched Orioles game is expected to be made up the next time the Bombers visit Baltimore as part of a doubleheader in early September, as it’s only one game and the MLB wants to fit as many games as they can. It’s currently unclear who Washington will play this weekend instead of the Marlins, as they will likely have a few days off.

As for the pitching plans for the upcoming series at Camden Yards, Gerrit Cole (NYY) will oppose Asher Wojechowski(BAL) in game 1, before JA Happ (NYY) goes against John Means (BAL) in game 2 on Thursday evening. Wednesday’s first pitch is at 7:35PM, while Thursday’s first offering is set for 7:05PM from Baltimore.

Dodgers 5 Astros 2

This game had a lot of action. Houston took a 2-0 lead, but a 5 run 5th by the Dodgers, and 5.1 scoreless innings from the bullpen(Adam Kolerak, Brucador Gaterol, Joe Kelly, Caleb Ferguson, Blake Treinin ,and Kenly Jansen) in relief of Walker Buhler lifted them to victory , in their first game in Houston since the 2017 World Series, which is the season Houston was caught illegally stealing-signs, rocking fans and players across baseball. Which is why, when Joe Kelly struck out Carlos Correa and taunted him while strutting off the mound saying “Go back to cheating”, the benches emptied and tensions boiled over. Thankfully no punches were thrown and players kept their social distancing and masks on, but words were said, and when the dust settled after the Dodgers win, consequences were handed over by Major League Baseball. Personally, I don’t blame the Dodgers for doing this, as they’re still angered that Houston “Stole a ring” from them in 2017, and even though Joe Kelly was a part of the Red Sox at the time, he was ultimately the player to officially send the message on Tuesday night, which is why MLB suspended him for 8 games (Which is equivalent to 22 in a 162 game season), Dodgers manager Dave Roberts 1, and fined new Astros manager Dusty Baker.

The two teams will meet again Wednesday night, and although I don’t think we will see retaliation again, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
