It’s Monday, so you know what that means? A NY sports check-in! So let’s take a look.
KNICKS: 25-36
What’s the point anymore? How do you still get demolished when RJ Barret goes for 46 points In a career game? I understand Friday night was the Miami Heat, arguably the top team in the East, but that doesn’t excuse the horrid 115-100 scoreline considering they were once up by double digits.
In addition to that, the Knicks seemed primed for an upset, as they rallied from a 16 point deficit to pull within 106-105 late in the fourth quarter. But when push came to shove, James Harden finished off a triple-double, featuring 29 points, ten rebounds, and 16 assists, and Joel Emblid used a chunk of his 23 free throws (accumulating to a 37 point night), as the 76ers closed out Sundays 125-106 win with a 19-4 clip.
This season keeps getting worse for these bumbling Knicks.
NETS: 32-29
After getting blasted 129-106 by the surging Celtics(36-27, 10-1 in last 11) at the Barclays Center, Kyrie Irving scored a career-high 38 points as the Nets defeated the Bucks 126-123 at Fiser Forum. It wasn’t pretty, but the Nets will take it, mainly because they’re currently nursing the eighth seed in the East.
RANGERS: 33-15-5
An impressive 4-1 win over the Washington Capitals, where Igor Shesterkin made 36 saves and carried a shutout for 58:52, and all four Rangers goals were scored at even strength, was overshadowed by losses over the weekend to the Penguins and Canucks. Saturdays matinee was an unfortunate one, as Shesterkin kept the Rangers afloat, but Tristan Jarry was even better on the other end, as the Blueshirts were bested 1-0. Back home on Sunday, New York placed Alexander Georgiev between the pipes for the first time in a month, and the Bulgarian was rusty, allowing four goals in the first two periods of play. Offensively, the Rangers were stymied by Thatcher Demko, whose 29 save performance lifted the Canucks to a 5-2 victory.
New York is now five games out of the first-place Hurricanes(37-11-4) in the Metropolitan division.
ISLANDERS: 20-21-8
These Isles continue to be challenging to figure out. They looked dominant in wins over the pitful Kraken,5-2, and Ducks,4-0, where Ilya Sorokin recorded a shutout. Unfortunately, they were ousted 4-3 in a shootout in San Jose and were overwhelmed 5-2 in LA against the Kings.
If the goal is still to make the playoffs? Then they’re not playing up to par.
YU:
The Macs(25-3) are going dancing. They took care of business and defeated Manhattanville 74-40 in the Skyline Conference championship game. Up next? The NCAA tournament!
NYCFC:
The reigning MLS champs dropped their season-opener 1-0 to the LA Galaxy in a tightly contested affair.
TENNIS:
Danil Medvedev is the new World number one, and it’s the first time since 2004 that’s it’s someone other than Murray, Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic.
