Welcome to today’s series of “Mornings with Marvin”, as we take a look at what happened last night (4/5) in the world of Sports.
NCAA:
THE BAYLOR BEARS ARE YOUR CHAMPIONS!!!! From the outset, they went right Gonzaga, and never looked bak en route to an 86-70 ROUT, spoiling Gonzaga’s bid of an undefeated campaign, and making the value of that miraculous Jalen Suggs shot, just a distant memory. Baylor led 9-0 just a few minutes in, and extended the lead to 20points midway through the first half. Gonzaga would rally however, and make things a bit interesting by cutting the deficit down to nine early in the second half, but two layups, two free-throws, and a three had the lead quickly back to 16, and never relinquished it from there. Jalen Butler led Baylor with 22 points, winning tourney MVP, with Baylor being the best team all tournament, saving the best for last with Monday;’s unbelievable performance for the schools first-ever championship. For Gonzaga, this was a “One and done” shot, with many now headed to the NBA draft. Coach Scott Drew took over Baylor 18 years ago, with the program a mess and in need of a leader. Drew never looked back, and here in 2021… he has reached the top of the mountain!
MLB:
GAME 1: ORIOLES 0 YANKEES 7
Jordan Montgomery went 6 scoreless innings, while Aaron Judge went deep, and Giancarlo Stanton mashed a grand slam, powering the Yankees to a 7-0 thrashing of the O’s
Against Baltimore starter Jorge Lopez, an Aaron Judge first-inning bomb got the Yankees going, before an Aaron Hicks RBI walk in the bottom of the fourth, chased Jorge. Then, with the bases juiced against Shawn Armstrong, Giancarlo Stanton destroyed a 471FT grand slam to left field, igniting the crowd, and extending the Bombers lead to 6-0. Meanwhile, Jordan Montgomery was dominant for New York in his first start of the season, going 6 scoreless innings of baseball with seven strikeouts, only four hits allowed, and zero walks. A DJ LeMahieu RBI single in the sixth made it 7-0, with Luis Cesse(2 innings), and Aroldis Chapman (The 9th) sealing the Bombers shutout.
GAME 1: METS. 3 PHILLIES 5
The Mets seemed primed for a win in their season-opener James Mccan, and Jacob Degrom drove in runs, while JD also went 6 scoreless innings with 7 strikeouts, and all the Mets needed were nine more outs out of their revamped bullpen to seal the win. Miguel Castro pitched a scoreless seventh, but big free-agent agent signing Trevor May entered, and lost control of the strike zone. A walk sandwiched in between two singles with one out, was followed by an HBP to force in a run, and bring Philly to within 2-1. This was followed by a game-tying RBI single from JT Realmunto, before a Luis Guillmore error, and a Didi Gregorious sac fly, put the Phillies in the lead at 5-2. The Mets would make it close with a Micheal Conforto RBI single in the ninth, but it wouldn’t be enough, as Pete Alonso flew out the warning track, sealing a 5-3 Phillies win.
NBA:
Kyrie Irving went for 40 points, and Jeff Green made two free throws with 3.7 seconds left, as the Nets(35-18) overcame the loss of James harden duet injury, and and eked out a win overhear rivals in the Knicks(25-26) 114-112. Despite the loss, RJ Barret poured in 22 points for NY, with Reggie Bullock going for 21, and Julius Randle pouring in 15 rebounds, with Alec Burks knocking down a game-tying three, keeping the Knicks close.
