Juan Soto stole the show with 3RBIs, while Max Scherzer shut down the Astros offense as the Nationals shocked the Astros 5-4 in game 1 of the World Series in Houston. The win is the 1st-ever Nats WS win, while the loss is Gerit Cole’s 1st since May 22nd.
As expected, Cole was cruising early and the Astros did not make it easy for Scherzer as they worked him from the beginning and it payed off, as Yuli Gurriel doubled home two in the 1st to give the Stros an early 2-0 lead.
However, the Nationals didn’t just get here by accident and showed it against the best pitcher on the planet in Cole as Ryan Zimmerman took him deep in 3rd and Juan Soto did the same in the 4th to even the game up at 2. The Nats wouldn’t stop there as an Adam Eaton RBI single would put them on top in the 5th, before a 2run double by Soto later in the inning made it 5-2 Nationals with the 5 runs being the 1st time Cole has given up that many runs since he last lost a start on May 22nd.
As for Scherzer, he went 5 innings of 2 run ball on 112 pitches and handed it off to the Nats bullpen as Patrick Corbin, Daniel Hudson and Sean Doolittle withstood a fearless Houston attack led by George Springer as his solo HR in the 6th and RBI double in the 8th, gave Houston life and cut the Washington lead to 5-4. But that would be as close as they got, as the Astros stranded the baes loaded in the 7th, when Hudson struck out Yordon Alvarez and left 2 men on in he 8th when Doolittle got Brantley to line out to left.
