Noah Syndergaard had the worst start of his career and the Mets never recovered as they dropped their 5th straight 10-7 to the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field that put the Mets 4 games back in the NL WC race.
“Thor” came in having 8 straight quality starts before this one but immediately ran into trouble as with men on 1st and 2nd with one out in the 1st, an error by Amed Rosario allowed a run to score which escalated the whole inning, as Kyle Schwarber notched an RBI double, Addison Russel singled home two and Ian Happ went deep for a 2run shot that gave the Cubs a commanding 6-0 lead.
Then, an inning later with the score now 6-1, a bloop double by Kris Bryant set up a 2run HR by Schwarber that extended the Cubs lead to 8-1. In the 10th, Nicolas Castellanos went deep for two more off Thor that gave Chicago a 10-1 lead.
Noah departed after 3 and the Mets bullpen shut the Cubs down the rest of the way.
As for the Mets bats, they were able to get to Kyle Hendricks as a Wilson Ramos fielders choice got the Mets on the board in the 1st as they now trailed 6-1.
Then, trailing 10-1 headed into the bottom of the 5th, the Mets brought Citi Field back to life again.
Jeff McNeil started it with a 2run HR before JD Davis followed it up with a HR of his own that cut the Mets deficit down to 10-4. A few batters later with 2 on and 2 out, Joe Panik RBI double made it a 10-5 game before Amed Rosario capped off a 5 run 5th that had Citi Field jumping as the Mets only trailed 10-6 with 4 innings to go.
In the 6th, the Mets threatened to keep the comeback party going as they had men on 1st and 2nd with 0 outs, before a JD Davis double play and a Michael Conforto groundout ended the threat with the score remaining 10-6. However, Conforto would make up for it as an RBI groundout from him cut the Mets deficit down to 10-7 as the bottom of the 9th approached with new Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel coming into the game.
The Mets brought the tying run to the plate with 2 outs as Todd Frazier came up with men on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, but a pop up ended the inning and the game as the Cubs held on for a 10-7 win.
MVP: Kyle Schwarber.
