OL MAN STILL GOT IT! SANTANA’S BLAST GIVES M’S SERIES VS YANKEES

In a clubhouse with little experience of being in a playoff chase, 12 year veteran Carlos Santana is one that has. The former slugger snapped an 0-for-17 slump with a go-ahead two-run homer during Seattle’s three-run seventh inning, and the Mariners(61-52) rallied to take the series and clinch a series over a Yankees team on Wednesday, they may see if they make it into the playoffs and past the wild card round in October.

The red-hot M’s haven’t dropped a stanza to anyone not named the AL West-leading Houston Astros and have been rollicking the season-churning 14 game win streak in June.

Kyle Higashioka hit a go-ahead, two-run homer on the 115th and final pitch from Seattle starter Robbie Ray in the seventh to snap a 19-inning scoreless streak for the Yankees, and Judge’s MLB-leading 45th bomb of the season off of Penn Murfee gave New York insurance at 3-1 later in the frame.

Ray and New York starter Nestor Cortes both #2 starters in their rotations respectively , followed electric outings from the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole and the Mariners’ Luis Castillo in game two which lasted over four hours, prior to the Mariners pulling out the victory and evening the tilt.

Cortes struck out 10 and didn’t allow a hit until Sam Haggerty homered off the left-field foul pole with one out in the sixth for the games first run.

Cortes was lifted after giving up consecutive singles to Ty France and Mitch Haniger to open the seventh. Haniger’s hit scored France to bring Seattle closer, as they trailed 3-2. Albert Abreu entered in the seventh, and struck out Eugenio Suarez. but left a changeup in the middle of the plate and the 36 year-old Santana didn’t miss, hitting his seventh home run since being acquired by Seattle in June. Murfee then retired DJ LeMahieu and Anthony Rizzo, Diego Castillo pitched a perfect eighth, and Paul Sewald worked the ninth. The Yankees(71-42) have now lost eight of their past 9 games and are 19-23 since June 24th. Nobody has been worse recently aside from the 43-72 and hapless Detroit Tigers.
