This time, the Yankees won it. Gary Sanchez went deep again, Corey Kluber made his debut, and the Yankees bullpen went 5 innings of one run ball, as the Bombers eked out their first victory, a 5-3 win over the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
Being that it was his first start in two years due to injury, Kluber was on a low pitch count, and it showed, in his final line, but he started out well, pitching two scoreless innings, before he allowed a couple of baserunners in the third, one coming around to score on an error, giving Toronto a run to tie the game. The Yankees would put men on base against Ross Stripling, and score in the second, on a DJ LeMahieu RBI single, take the lead on a Gary Sanchez home run, and then tack on an insurance run when Aaron Hicks legged out an Infield single, with the bases loaded, to extend the NY lead to 3-1. After a Marcus Semien bomb chased Kluber in the fifth, with Jonothan Losiga pitching two scoreless innings in relief, the Yankees bats once again looked for insurance runs.
That chance came in the sixth, when Rafael Dolis(Who pitched a scoreless inning on Thursday), walked the bases loaded, being relived for Tim Mayans, who was brought into specifically to face the birthday- boy in 34-year-old Jay Bruce. With the count at 2-2 Bruce blooped a 2run single, extending the Yankees lead, which would be the last runs they would score all game, going silent once again.
With no Aroldis Chapman(Suspended), and Zack Britain out due to injury, the Yankees went to Lucas Lutege, who pitched in, and out of some trouble in the sixth, only allowing a run, before Darren O Day, and Chad Green (Four out save),locked down the teams first win of the season, to even up the series.
