On ”Kids day” at the Thunder Dome, (1/5), the YDE Jv Hockey team improved to 7-2 on the season, with a 5-2 victory over the feisty MTA Lions on Sunday afternoon, witnessed by a sell-out crowd on hand to see it happen.
The win improves the YDE record to 7-2 on the season.
YDE came out flying, controlling the play and wasted no time getting on the board first, as not even a minute in, leading scorer Bobby Tawil punched one home to get the YDE fans going and give them a 1-0 lead. The Thunder would strike again moments later, when Sammy Franco sniped one past the Lions goaltender, to double the lead. The rest of the first period, saw MTA settle in, and put some pressure on the YDE defense and goalie, Eddie Khezrie who responded with some big athletic saves, keeping the visitors off the board. Late in the first period, YDE tripled their lead when Ikey Greenstein banged one home to give the home team a commanding 3-0 lead.
In the second period, YDE kept up the pressure, as Sammy Franco scored home his second goal of the game, roofing one into the twine to increase the Thunder lead to 4-0. By now, the Lions and their faithful were stunned, as they had entered the Thunder Dome needing a win as they battle for the last playoff spot in the top-heavy Western Division, and currently trailed 4-0 to a YDE team that came in as underdogs.
Which is why that the rest of the period, saw MTA ramp up the offensive pressure, and the Thunder defense, led by Abie Esses, Ikey Greenstein, Ikey Dweck, Sammy Cohen and Eddie Khezrie in goal stymied the Lions attack. But late in the frame, was when MTA went on the power play, and got one past Khezrie with 16 seconds remaining to cut the Thunder lead down to 4-1 after 2 periods of play.
The beginning of the 3rd period, saw MTA go on the man advantage again, but only for YDE to essentially salt the game away, as Sammy Franco broke through for a breakaway, and sent home his hat-trick clinching goal to bring the Thunder faithful to their feet again, as they now led 5-1. The Lions wouldn’t go down without a fight however, as they fired darts on goall, which were stopped by Eddie Khezrie, and the missiles that were stopped before they hit the target, were do to the great and physical defense of Steven Shemula and Jack Harary, who showed the world once again that “Big things come in small packages”.
MTA would add a late PP goal to their late tally, but the damage had been done as the Thunder walked away as 5-2 victors.
