CC Sabathia struggled in his return from the IL and the Yankees bats were unable to get to Mike Clevinger as the Indians earned a split of this pivotal four game series by defeating the Yankees 8-4 on a sunny Sunday Afternoon (8/18) in the Bronx, NY.
The Indians got to CC early and often, as a Greg Allen Fielders choice and a Mike Freeman 3run HR in the second would give the Indians a quick 4-0 lead and set the tone for the game, as Nestor Cortes JR and Luis Cessa came in to relive CC who only went 3 innings and gave up 4 runs themselves as Cleveland put up an 8 spot on the Yankees pitching.
As for the Yankees bats, Mike Clevinger mowed them down, as he went 6 scoreless innings with 10Ks.
The Yankees made it interesting late as DJ LeMahieu went deep for a 2runHR in the 7th and notched an RBI single in the 9th, before an Aaron Judge RBI double with 1 out in the Yankees “last licks” brought the Yankees to within 8-4, but Didi Gregorious struck out with 2 men on base and Gio Urshela missed a HR by inches to end the game and seal the victory for Cleveland.
MVP: Mike Clevinger
THOUGHTS:No worries. Big lead in East, nice lead for now over the Astros(who are 79-46) (3.5 games) for AL home field, we maintained our 9 game lead over the Indians(74-51) this weekend who are also in the race for home field and still lead the Dodgers(82-44) for the best record in baseball.
No worries, enjoy the off day and back at it Tuesday! Big West Coast trip coming up. Let’s go Yankees!!!
FAN OPINIONS:
ELI REUBEN:
I had a slight feeling we would rally in the 9th inning and win it and so did the fans especially in the 9th.
But we didn’t and we did, it would have been my favorite game i have event gone too. CC had a rough outing, but I’m glad that Judge somewhat got out of his slump today and Friday. Hopefully we can go to the west coast and sweep everyone!
Let’s go Yankees!!!
INJURY REPORT:
Thairo Estrada became the 28th different Yankee to hit the IL this season, as he appeared to have hurt himself late in Saturday’s 6-5 win and was placed on the IL Sunday with a hamstring injury.
The Yankees gave called up Tyler Wade to take Estrada’s spot on the roster.
UP NEXT:
The Yankees (83-43) will now have their depth put to the test once again this season when they start a big 9 game west coast trip against the red -hot A’s (71-53), the red-hot Dodgers (82-44) and the Mariners (52-73).
Game one of this grueling trip will be on Tuesday in Oakland against the Athletics, as Domingo German will go for the Yankees against Yankee-killer Homer Bailey of the A’s.
