The Yankees arrived home with confidence and determination after having salvaged the final game of their weekend series in Boston against the Red Sox, as well as finally getting a chance to avenge their 2 game sweep in late April when the Diamondbacks swept them out of Arizona.
But the D Backs (54-54) had other plans, as they rattled off yet another win against the Yankees 4-2 on a cool Tuesday Night (7/30) in the Bronx,NY. The loss drops the Yankees (67-39) to 3rd in the MLB (Second in the AL) behind the Dodgers and Astros.
JA Happ took the mound for the Yankees and was hit hard early, as Arizona worked Happ's pitch count in the first, and scored on an Adam Jones sac fly. The D Backs would push across two more runs in the 4th, as Christian Walker went deep, before Nick Ahmed singled home a run to put Arizona up 3-0. But Happ would settle down and turn in a solid 6 innings of 3 run ball outing which would qualify as the second straight quality start by a Yankees starting pitcher.
As for Arizona, they sent Taylor Clarke to the mound who entered Tuesday's game with a 6.10 ERA on the season before not pitching like it, as his slider was sharp, keeping the Yankees off balance until the 6th inning, when they finally got to him.
Down 3-0, Aaron Judge hit a line drive to right, that was booted by D Backs right fielder Adam Jones allowing Judge to head to second, for Edwin Encarnacion to double him home, as the Yankees had gotten on the board and were now only down 3-1. The Yankees had thee bases loaded later in the inning with two outs for Mike Tauchmanm, but he grounded out to Shortstop to end the inning, as Arizona preserved their 3-1 lead.
Luis Cessa came into relive Happ, and though he did go 3 innings of 1 run ball, the lone run he gave up seemed to have taken the life out of the Yankees, as Carson Kelly led off the 7th with a HR that put the D Backs up 4-1 and restored their 3 run advantage.
Tyler Wade made the most of his MLB opportunity by socking a HR to right in the 8th, but that would be all the Yankees could muster, as Archie Bradley retired the Bomber in order in the 9th to seal a 4-2 Arizona win.
MVP: Taylor Clarke
