Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be for the Mets on Friday night (8/23) as not even a super Jacob Degrom could save them as the Braves took the opener of this 3 game series 2-1 in 14 innings.
The loss puts the Mets 2.5 back in the NL WC race.
Degrom was dealing through the first 5 innings and had retired 8 in a row while racking up several Ks before the Braves finally put a dent in his armor with an RBI single by Freddie Freeman in the 6th go give Atlanta a 1-0 lead.
But Degrom would come right back and finish his night on the pitching side with 7 innings of 1run ball while racking up 13Ks.
On the batters side of the ball, Degrom was a stud as well as he smacked a solo shot off Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz (Who did a good job of shutting the Mets starters down) in the 6th to send the Citi Field crowd into a frenzy and tie the game at 1.
The game would become a “Battle of the Bullpens” with the Mets having multiple chances to walk it off once again. In the bottom of the 10th with the score tied at 1 and the game already in extras, Amed Rosario stepped up with the bases loaded and 2 outs but struck out as the game stayed tied. Then in the 11th, the Mets had a runner on 3rd with one out, big Michael Conforto struck out before Aaron Altherr grounded out with men on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs to end the threat.
In the 14th, the Braves finally broke through what had been an amazing Mets Bullpen for the last 6 innings after Degrom departed as they had kept the game tied at 1 until the 14th when Billy Hamilton singled home a run off Jeurys Familia that would give the Braves the lead at 2-1 and they would win by that score in this marathon game.
MVP: Billy Hamilton
THOUGHTS:
Tough game and it could’ve gone either way. Just get em on Saturday.
STATS TO KNOW:
The Braves are the second team ever to strike out 26 times and still win. The other team to do that were the 2004 Braves when they defeated the Reds 1-0 in 17 innings in early June.
UP NEXT:
The Mets will look to even the series on Saturday (8/24), when Zach Wheeler toes the rubber against Max Freid in a rematch from last weeks affair in Atlanta.
Game time is 7:15PM.
