SPORTS LOCKDOWN UPDATE: PLAYOFFS ON THE HORIZON?

SPORTS WORLD UPDATE:

NBA: They’re deciding between 3-4 separate playoff plans.

•30 team tournament

•24/20 team play-in

•20 team group stage tournament

•16 team playoffs, regardless of conference.

NFL: No changes thus far

NHL: Yesterday, NHL commissner Gary Bettman made the 24 team playoff official while also explaining the 2020 NHL Lottery rules.

PHASE 1: The 7 teams that didn’t make the postseason (Devils, Red Wings, Senators, Ducks, Sharks (Whos pick goes to Ottawa) and Kings), will be in the lottery among 8 other “Placeholder spots” representing the 8 losers from the play-in round. The 3 drawings for the top 3 picks will take place on June 26th, with the playoffs beginning in late July.

PHASE 2: If one of the 3 lotteries comes up as “Placeholder” representing a play-in round loser, the NHL will conduct a separate lottery, featuring all of the play-in round losers, as they will fight it out for that pick. As opposed to the first lottery, where the NHL-worst Red Wings have the best chance of anyone for the first pick.

MLB: The owners and players continue to clash over salaries, with the MLBPA wanting full pro-rated salaries for this season, and the owners being unable to make that up fully, because of no fan-revenue.

The two sides have been unable to come to an agreement, and with only a week left until the deadline should an 82 game season be realistic, their is a “Big gap” with what the owners and players want. Should the players back away from their seemingly,” All or nothing” demand, the owners will stop “lowballing” the players and the two can come to a compromise and make this season a possibility.

TRANSACTION OFFICE: Former-Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco will mentor Sam Darnold in NY, as he joined the Jets on a 1 year, $1.5 million deal on Friday. However, Flacco said yesterday that he won’t be ready at the very beginning of the season because of his neck injury. The question is obviously, will that matter?

The Seahawks took a “Flyer” on WR/RB Carlos Hyde. Gives another weapon for Wilson to give the ball too and it increases depth. The deal has recently become officiall at 1 year $4 million.

TAKEAWAYS:

Wins-win for the Rangers!

If the Rangers defeat the Hurricanes, and the Blue Jackets defeat the Maple Leafs the Rangers will have themselves a lottery pick, while still being in the playoffs. This is a result of the Brady Skjei trade, when the Rangers dealt him to Carolina, in exchange for a 1st round pick of the Canes choice, since they have their own and one from the Leafs.

Since the Hurricanes will likely give the Rangers the lesser pick of the two, if the Blueshirts want a lottery pick then they will have to hope the Jackets defeat the Leafs in the play-in round, or else they will get two late 1st round picks if both New York and Toronto win, which is still very good as well. On the other hand, the Rangers would get a lottery pick and a late round draft pick should the Hurricanes win the series.

It will be exciting to see how this young Rangers team reacts to the different climate that is postseason hockey!
