The motors back in the Moter City were able to get their engines going on Sunday (9/2) in the Bronx, as the Tigers defeated the Yankees in a slugfest 11-7, to gain a split of this four-game weekend series. The Yankees came into Sunday's game, with high spirits, knowing that a win, would give them the series 3-1, and be a nice confidence builder moving forward.
But unfortunately for the Yankees, it wasn't meant to betas the Tigers feasted on Yankees weak links Lance Lynn and Sonny Gray, who's holes were too much for the Yankees offense to overcome.
When I saw the starting pitchers for this game, I was confident that it would be a Yankees victory, even though it featured two average pitchers. Lance Lynn ( Yankees), Mathew Boyd ( Tigers ).
Early on , it looked like that would happen, as the Yankees answered a Goodrum RBI single in the top of the first , the Yankees scored two in the bottom of the first , as Aaron Hicks went deep, Miguel Andujar doubled, and Gary Sanchez singled him home to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead!
But just as they have done all series. the Tigers did not go away , as Victor Reyes nocked an RBI double to tie the game at 2 in the second.
Reyes wasn't done , as he plated another run in the 4th with an RBI double to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. That’s where it all
started going south for the Yankees pitching, as a 2 run double by Jacoby Jones , knocked Lynn out of the game .
Then , a 2 run HR by Nicholas Castellanos served up by Tommy Kahnle capped off the 5 run 4th , and gave the Tigers a comanding 7-2 lead.
That seemed to deflate the Yankees, but give credit to the Bombers fighting back, as Luke Voit hit a solo shot in the bottom of the 4th, to cut the deficit to 7-3.
Then down 8-3 in the 8th, the Yankees staged a rally, as, Miguel Andujar singled home Mccutchen, and then later in the inning, Neil Walker reached on an Infield single, to bring in a run and make it an 8-5 game. That Walker single, kept the rally alive, as Greg Bird was the next man up with the bases loaded an two outs. But Bird lined out to right to end the inning.
The Tigers took advantage of that deflating moment and scored 3 more times in the 9th, while the Yankees only mustered a 2 run single by Gleyber Torres to make the final score 11-7 Detroit.
