SUPER SATURDAY SPORTS UPDATE 1/9/21: KNICKS, NETS AT 5WINS, NFL PLAYOFFS GET UNDERWAY

Things have gotten interesting in the NY basketball world, and I’m using this edition of the “Super Saturday Sports report”, to give everyone an update what has been happening lately.

NETS :5-5(2-3 in last week)

After their offensive slugfest 145-141 victory over the Hawks on December 30th, the rematch didn’t go well for Brooklyn, as they fell 114-96 two nights later to those same Hawks at Barclays Center.

Two nights after that on January 3rd, Kyrie Irving missed a late trey, and KD missed a jumper the same play, as the Nets were stunned by the Wizards 123-122. After that, the Nets got news that KD would miss four games due to COVID-19 protocols, and Kyrie would miss time, due to “personal reasons”, which has been revealed, and it’s due to the fact he’s sitting out, and protesting the riots at the US Capitol, and the “BLM” movement.

The Nets depth has been tested, and they’ve responded with two big wins over the Jazz(130-96), and the previously 7-1 76ers(122-109). In those games, Jarret Allen, Joe Harris, and Caris Leveret have turned into stars once again, as they having to shine for the shorthanded roster like they did in the bubble last Summer. On Friday, Caris Levert poured in 43, but it wasn’t enough in a 115-110 loss to the Grizzlies.

KNICKS:5-4(3-2 in last week)

After a poor shooting night in a 100-83 New Years eve loss in Tampa Bay to the Raptors, the Knicks reeled off three straight improbable wins, and have a winning record folks! It started with a revenge win Indiana, where they used a late 13-6 run, led by RJ Barret(22 points), and Julius Randle, in a 106-102 victory. Then in Atlanta, the Knicks turned a 13 point deficit into a 113-108 win, as Immanuel Quickly hit some big3’s off the bench, Kevin Knox hit a 3rd quarter buzzer beater, Randle had 26 points, Barret went off again, and Austin Rivers hit a couple of game-sealing shots to give the Knicks the win. After returning home, NY welcomed the Donovan Mitchell led Jazz to town, and rallied from an 18 point deficit aided by a 30 point night by Julis Randle, and 14 straight points late in the game by the red-hot Austin Rivers to give the hosts a double-digit lead, in a 112-100victory. Unfortunately, the streak ended on Friday night (1/8), as a poor shooting night saw the young Thunder snap the Knicks streak in a 101-89 road win. Nevertheless, Tom Thibeadou’s group has been playing inspired basketball, and I’m very happy about that.

FOOTBALL:

COLTS 24 BILLS 27:

Thoughts on Bills game:

This was exactly how a typical NFL playoff game should feel, and look like. The 11-5 Colts were the 7 seed, but obviously were better than advertised, and it showed as led by Phillip Rivers, they fought until the very end.

Both teams traded blows, none bigger in the first half, then a Josh Allen TD, on a drive where the Colts had an INT three separate times, but were called off due to penalties.

In the second half, the Allen dime to Diggs was amazing, especially when Indy missed an FG on the previous drive.

Props to the Colts for making it a game late, especially their defense getting a quick 3 and out, because it seemed to be over after they turned it over, on Downs.

However, the amazing defense by the Bills, especially on the Hail Mary pass from Philip Rivers, sealed the deal.

This was a great test for the Buffalo(14-3), and they survived in front of 6,700 of Bills Mafia for their first playoff win in 25 years. Onto next week!

RAMS 30 SEAHAWKS 20:

After John Wilford left the game due to injury, “emergency” QB Jared Goff came in, and torched the Seahawks defense, just days after having surgery on his thumb, while a pick six was part of an electric night for a Los Angeles defense against Russel Wilson, despite missing the best DE in football, Aaron Donald.

BUCS 31 WFT 23:

Tom Brady was dealing in the Wild Card win 22/40 C/Att 381 Pass Yds 2 TD. This was Brady’s first non-patriot playoff win.

As for Washington, Tyler Henickee subbed in, because Alex Smith was out due to injury, and was spectacular, keeping his team in it despite a shoulder injury, bringing them back from an early 9-0 deficit to make it an 18-16 game, after diving towards the end zone. Down 28-16, Tyler led his team down the field for another TD drive to get. Them within five. But down eight late in the contest, an INT on the Hail Mary attempt put the fun story to rest. This 7-10 Football team, has a lot of questions this offseason, like will they resign TH who is a free-agent, as the season comes to a close. This was a guy who was taking zoom classes at Old Dominion university not too long ago, and is now on the QB free-agency radar in the NFL, wow.
