On the bright side, the Yankees won’t have to see Oakland until at least the ALDS when they will most likely have home field advantage. The A’s completed the 3 game series sweep 5-3 in Oakland or otherwise known as the Yankees “House of Horrors” on Thursday night (8/22), by getting to Masahiro Tanaka early and often while shutting down the Yankees offense once again.
The A’s came out swinging against Masahiro Tanaka early and often as a Matt Olson fielders choice and a Matt Chapman 2run single gave Oakland a 3-0 lead after 1. In the second, Chapman delivered again as an RBI single put the A’s up 4 before a Gleyber Torres throwing error gave Oakland a 5-0 lead after 2.
Masa would settled down after that as he gutted out 6 innings in this start saving the Yankees bullpen.
As for the Yankees bats, Tanner Roark shut them down as he went 6 innings of 1 run ball with the only run coming off a Mike Tauchman RBI single. The Yankees made it interesting late as Gleyber Torres went deep twice but unfortunately for the Yankees, they were solo shots so the Yankees still fell 5-3.
MVP: Tanner Roark
THOUGHTS:
Not panicking. Tough loss but that’s the way it goes here in Oakland. It’s a rough patch but the Yankees will be fine. I think a new environment will help these guys out as they head to LA for a showdown with the Dodgers this weekend. These guys have always come up clutch when they needed too and they can do it again! Let’s go Yankees!!
STATS TO KNOW:
This is just the 2nd time this season the Yankees have been swept in a series of 3+ games. (The other was April 8-10 at Houston.)
Gleyber Torres (22 yrs, 253 days) is the 2nd youngest player in MLB history to reach 10 career multi-HR games.
The only younger player to do it was Mel Ott (22 Years, 163 days).
Gleyber Torres: 2nd game this year he hit 4-for-4 with 2 HR.
Only other player in Yankees history to have multiple games in a season going 4-for-4 or better with 2+ HR is Lou Gehrig in 1934.
UP NEXT:
The Yankees (83-46) head to LA for the showdown we’ve been waiting for as they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers (85-44) in a 3 game series beginning Friday (8/23).
James Paxton will get the ball for the Yankees while CY Young candidate Hyun-Jin-Ryu will go for the Dodgers.
Game time is 10:10 EST from Dodger Stadium.
