The US Open is here and before I get into what happened in RD1, I want to fill you in on the “Greatest Tennis weekend ever” at Wimbledon this past Summer because that is where I feel like some of the Tennis community is still recovering from.
One of the semifinal matchups were Federer- Nadal so you knew the building would be packed in London and it was to the gills!
As for the match, it lived up to the hype as the 1st set went to a tiebreaker where Fed was victorious 7-3 sending the Fed faithful in attendance into a frenzy.
In the second set, Rafa was all over Rodger and took it 6-1, Fed just had no answers for him in that set as Rafa evened it up.
The 3rd set was back and forth as both players were obviously giving it their all making it an amazing match to watch. But in the end, Rodger got the break of serve and took the third set 6-3 to go up 2 sets to 1.
The fourth set was the best set as both players somehow turned their level up a notch leading to some amazing shots and rallies! The final game of the set seemed like it was taking forever but nobody wanted it to stop! But in the end, it was Rodger who took the fourth set and the match 7-6 (3) 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 and advanced to the finals to battle Novak Djokovic in what would be the greatest match anyone has ever seen!
The first set of this final saw both players stay on serve with Fed being the one putting more pressure on the Novak serve then vice versus. That proved crucial in the tiebreaker, as Rodger rallied down 3-1 to take a 4-3 lead before Novak stormed back to take the tiebreaker 7-5 and with it, the first set.
The second set was all Federer, as he upped his level and took the second set 6-1 to even this match up.
The third set was just like the 1st one with Rodger outplaying Novak, but once the tiebreaker happened, it was Novak who took control as he took the third set tiebreaker 7-4 and a 2 sets to 1 lead.
The 4th set saw Rodger once again respond to a tiebreaker loss by raising his game as he took a 5-2 lead and hung on 6-4 to force a winner-take all final set for the ages for the Wimbledon title.
Novak got the break early in the 4th , as he went up 4-2 before Rodger stormed back and tied things up. The two players would go on and on, gusty hold of serves despite high pressure from the opponent and because it was the 5th set, it would be win by 2 games until 12 all. So when it was 6-6 in the 5th set, everyone knew we were just getting started.
Finally after a tense 14 games, Federer got the break of serve he desperately coveted as he took an 8-7 lead and led 40-15 on his serve, before out of nowhere, Novak saved two championship points on defense and broke Rodger to tie things up at 8 and keep this thrilling match going!
The match never ceased to amaze people every game and really every point as everyone kept asking themselves “ How are they doing this?” “How are they playing this good for this long?” and as the match wore on, we just stopped asking and started only watching this masterpiece by these two champions.
Finally, the tiebreaker arrived as it was 12 all and unfortunately for Rodger, Novak raised his game and took the tiebreaker 7-3 in a 4:55 minute thriller that many people called “The Greatest Match of All time”. That win gave Novak his 6th Wimbledon title and his 16th grand slam title.
Now into the US OPEN!
So far in round 1, the big guns haven’t disappointed as Rodger and Novak both moved comfortably into the second round with Rafa yet to come.
Novak took out Roberto- Carballes Baena in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, while Rodger (Although he dropped the 1st set) took out Stephen Nagal 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4.
Novak and Rodger could potentially meet in the semifinals, while Rafa could potentially meet them in the finals. We will see what happens!
UPDATE:
Nadal defeates John Milman in the 1st RD 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
