In a thrilling end to a thrilling season, the YDE Thunder stunned the MDY Warriors 54-45, in the 8th-grade basketball championship on Tuesday night (3/19), in front of a sold out crowd at HAFTR and hundreds watching around the NY area.
YDE came into this game 12.5 underdogs, as they were going up against an undefeated MDY team, that had lost in the finals the two previous years, and we're looking to bring that coveted trophy back to MDY before their elementary careers were over.
In the first half, YDE was all over MDY, as they were just overpowering them , especially in the second quarter, turning a close game, into a commanding 26-13 halftime lead in the blink of an eye!!
This was due in part to the 3 point shooting by the Thunder.
In the second half though, MDY shifted the gears of this game , as they blitzed the Thunder by going on a 16-5 run to cut into the YDE lead, and by the end of the third, were only down 34-32, setting up a wild finish heading into the last 8 minutes of the game .
YDE started off strong in the 4th, as they were clutch on defense keeping the lead.
Then, after what seemed like an eternity, a team finally made a basket , and it was from the Thunder, as a big 3 pointer put them up 5 with 6 minutes to play!
YDE didn’t let up, as they extend the lead to 49-40 with 90 seconds remaining!
But just as the YDE faithful was beginning to taste that improbable championship, the Warriors made a run.
MDY put home a quick bucket, and then got an and one to cut the YDE lead down to 4 at 49-45.
But just as they did every other time, YDE stepped up when they needed to the most . Their defense came up clutch, and they hit their free throws to extend the lead and upset the Warriors 54-45!!!!!!
As soon as the buzzer sounded , Thunder nation stormed the court in jubilation, as they had just capped off one of the most improbable runs in Yeshivah league history!!!!
It also the first ever championship for the Thunder.
As for MDY, they have now lost in the finals 3 years in a row, and for the 2nd time in 3 years, see their perfect season come to an end.
